Dr Fresch Prescribes Fashion Advice
My first trip to Miami was a roaring success. I had never been to Miami Beach -- or even Miami -- other than arriving to leave immediately on a cruise. I was instantly struck by how colorful Miami Beach is, from the buildings to the lifeguard stands there was personality all around me. And of course, this carried over to the fashion scene.
Something that has been on my list of ‘things to do’ for my blog is artist interviews. I want to do artist interviews that are unique to my site and speak to why readers are even on here in the first place. Basically, I want to do interviews with artists on their fashion.
So here I am with my first artist interview on their personal style, with no better location to kick it off in than Miami.
I was excited to meet Dr Fresch during Miami Music Week 2019 at The Prescription Records Official Label Showcase. I was dancing to his set when his pastel hair and matching pink leopard print outfit struck me as so perfectly Miami. I was lucky enough to grab his ear after his set and ask for a fashion interview.
Dr Fresch was super easy to talk to. He has a relaxed personality that lights up when he’s talking about something he’s passionate about, and I was quick to learn that fashion is something he’s passionate about.
He describes his style as “a mashup between psychedelic streetwear with a touch of high fashion”. Dr Fresch mixes pieces you could wear to a coffee shop with the unexpected turn of a unique color or print, creating a style that’s all his own.
While he totally gets it today, that wasn’t always his fashion story. He’s been exploring self expression via fashion since high school. Turns out he was a kid who grew up having to wear a uniform to school for years, and while he was in school, he had to find fun ways to add a personal touch to a regimented look.
Since then, he’s gone through a lot of personal growth on what works for him and makes him feel best. Finding his happy place in fashion took some time, just like it can for many of us.
“When I first began touring I started to fit into the mold of every other DJ, and my wardrobe was 70% black. I was even dating a girl at the time who would wear all black, but I think it was after we broke up, I was going through old boxes from high school and realized, you know what? Dressing ridiculously is what makes me happy, and it’s always been part of me.”
When you discover your fashion sense and develop your own style you can find a confidence inside you that brings you joy. It doesn’t have to be crazy over the top pieces, but just what makes you feel like the best version of you.
For Dr Fresch, he aspires to “authentically mix silly, goofy, psychedelic, trippy attire and vibes” -- taking his personality and letting it shine through is sense of style in a bold way.
People ask me what will make them look the best at an event, and really what makes you look best is feeling confident in what you’re wearing. In our festival/rave world we have a safe space to express our creative side through playful fashion. Every event allows us to experiment and discover what makes us unique and feel the most confident. We can then take those learnings outside the events and mix fun pieces into everyday life.
I think many of us have experienced, and will continue to experience, many stages in our fashion journey, just as Dr Fresch has, with the emphasis on expressing yourself.
“It’s important how you choose to represent yourself to others, past the superficial it’s all about creative expression in our community.”
It can take time to develop your personal style and feel like you’re true to yourself and not repeating some photo you saw on Instagram. Trying new pieces every once in a while helps you reach a space you feel confident in, and taking inspo from favorite IG accounts helps as well.
“If you wanna start dressing crazy for festivals pick a theme. Maybe crazy shorts are your thing. You’re really into athletic wear already, you wanna get weird, find one staple that really works for you and your outfit instead of a bunch of crazy stuff. Just adding one piece can flip your whole outfit upside down.”
Start small to go big, take inspo from those around you, feel confident in your choices and enjoy the journey. Finding your own fashion sense can take a lifetime, but it’s a fun ride. Be sure to check out the Brands page on my site to find inspo for your next look, and what piece might be fun for you!
