Seven Lies, DJ Rum (2013)
Producer Felix Manuel certainly wasn’t a pioneer of the sparse dubstep, future garage style he prostrated himself to on his debut full length Seven Lies, but that isn’t to say it wasn’t enjoyable. Indeed, Manuel’s patient, rationed beats and expansive ambient background soundscapes were immaculately layered and slotted together in a way that bolsters his status as one of the genre’s better producers. Seven Lies isn’t as mobile as something like Untrue, but it doesn’t necessarily try to be. At fifty minutes and rarely a song under six minutes, Manuel treats his listener to minute progressions and rhythmic repetition that would lose its impact over a shorter run time. Not everything has to be musically important or stylistically game-changing and that’s especially the case in a lot of club-orientated electronic music. Seven Lies is profusely well-made dubstep/future garage that isn’t necessarily trying to reinvent the genre but tap into one of its darker, more ambient corners.
