Some people say that the music industry is no longer about music, but rather, sales. I would agree to this argument, but not without thinking about the reasons behind it. It is very easy to look at the artists and blame them for sucking up to the lowest common denominator of music creation – but they would not be the only ones to blame. The DJs have a habit of playing nothing new or original, and while they are at it they seem only to excel in finding new songs, rather than mixing them well. Are they the ones to blame? Let’s go back even farther to think about the ones who are making this all happen – the fans.
They are the ones that buy music, and they are the ones who control how the industry will shift and change. They seem to love what’s popular, and don’t seem to sweat the idea that their purchases shape the industry every day. None of them can really take full responsibility for the music industry, since they are losing money every day. Those that fail to keep up with the times are getting hit the hardest by a lack of physical media sales and piracy.
