DJ Trance Live at Stargate - September 1995

This is a 27-minute audio recording of DJ Trance playing live at Stargate, on September 16, 1995. The event took place at the T2 steel mill outside Los Angeles, California.

I'm thrilled to present a small nugget from the old school: DJ Trance spinning at Stargate, a rave held at the infamous "T2 steel mill"!

Arriving at the steel mill was a surreal, as it had been featured in the 1991 movie Terminator 2. Recall the scene in which Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg character meets its fate. This was the same place Arnold got lowered into a boiling caldron of molten steel!

The venue was dark, dirty, and dangerous. What a PERFECT location for a rave!

I performed a live techno set that night under the name Geobeat. It was among the best performances I ever gave. Sadly, the levels on the DAT were too hot, resulting in clipping and distortion for most of the tape.

However, all was not lost. I recorded several other noteworthy deejays that night, including DJ Tron.

Recently, a member of a certain Facebook group pleaded to know if there existed a recording of DJ Trance's set. That mention prompted me to open the Rave Tapes archive and see what I could find. I located the Stargate tapes and pulled the one labeled "DJ Trance" in my sloppy handwriting.

This recording was made on analogue cassette. I used my little DAT machine to record the hardcore/techno/trance room, where I performed. But I just couldn't resist recording the house room, too, as the lineup was amazing. Since I only had one DAT recorder back then, I had no choice but to record the house deejays using my Sony component cassette deck. I'm really glad I did.

Regarding the content/programming, this is classic DJ Trance. He throws down one underground classic after another, each reflecting Trance's, funky, uplifting style. The mixing is tight, the audio is clean.

Listeners will notice this mix is short – just 27:51. Why? It was probably a case of too many deejays on the flyer…and all of them showing up! When that happened, promoters would simply ask deejays to cut their sets short. So it was the case at Stargate.

27:51 is all we have, but it's a fabulous set regardless of the length! Enjoy!

DJ Trance Live at Magic Wednesdays May 1996

This is a 79-minute audio recording of DJ Trance playing live at Magic Wednesday on May 8, 1996, held at Carlos and Charlie's on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. This portion of DJ Trance's set began at 12:48 am (following morning).

This is classic DJ Trance just as you remember him – happy, house-y, funky, acidy techno spun at moderate tempo.

The mention of Magic Wednesdays necessitates an explanation of the notion "underground club". Traditionally, socializing and dancing at night clubs and discos was reserved for Friday and Saturday nights. Why would people pay money to go dancing on a week night? They did it FOR THE MUSIC!

In the early and mid-1990's, house, techno and trance were far from the mainstream. Of course, there were all-night raves and underground parties happening on weekends. But true fans of the MUSIC wanted - or needed - somewhere to go when no raves or undergrounds were scheduled. Furthermore, Jason Jay and the promoters of Magic Wednesdays somehow managed to snag all the top talent as they toured through Los Angeles. The deejays seen at Magic Wednesdays were the very same deejays appearing at all the important undergrounds and raves around Los Angeles during the 1990's.

Therefore, Magic Wednesdays was a true underground club by definition, because it occurred mid-week, and because it featured legit talent from the "underground" dance music scene. Goldie, Chemical Brothers, Carl Craig, Sven Vath, Keoki, Doc Martin, Michael Dog, Jonah Sharp, and so many more underground legends graced the decks at Magic Wednesdays.

This recording is special to me because it's Trance, one of my all-time favorite deejays, and because it's Magic Wednesdays, one of my all-time favorite regulars from back in the day.

The sound quality is good. The crowd mic is present but really low – you can only hear it a couple times during the entire recording. A little bass rumble from one turntable is noticeable a few times, but it's nothing too bad. When I have more time I may come back and take another crack at mastering it.

DJ Trance Live at Technostate Jungle - April 2015

This is a 70-minute audio recording of DJ Trance playing live at Technostate Jungle, on April 4, 2015. The event took place at a warehouse in Los Angeles. This portion of the set began shortly after 11 pm.

This is a RARE recording of DJ Trance playing JUNGLE and old school!

Of course, we all know Trance (Jason Blakemore) as a master of funky, acidy breaks and house. Yet, there was his name on the flyer for Technostate Jungle, right next to R.A.W. and Curious?. I had assumed he would play his normal style, but I had assumed wrong. Instead, he played a nice mix of jungle, melodic drum and bass as well as some old school rave jams.

Chatting with him afterward, he said he viewed his set as a challenge, a departure from what he normally plays. Suffice it to say, his set was great, a perfect prelude to the slightly harder styles of R.A.W. and Curious.

Many of my supporters were aware that I STREAMED video of this event on YouTube! It was an amazing document – it really gave viewers a sense of being there, not to mention the amazing music it featured. I wouldn't say it was going viral, but more than 800 views and 50 thumbs-up in less than 72-hours wasn't bad!

However, the publisher of one 2-minute track activated YouTube's copyright enforcement tool to BLOCK the remaining 5 hours of content! The publisher rejected my reasonable claim of Fair Use, which has rendered the original version of the video stream unwatchable.

But...the misguided meddling of a zealous record label will not suppress this music from being heard!

In addition to Trance's set , I intend to release mastered audio of R.A.W.'s and Curious' sets on Soundcloud. Most importantly, in the next day or two I will release a High-Definition edit of the video stream, without the problematic, 2-minute segment. For those who care, the picture and sound quality of the new edit will be far superior to the original stream saved on YouTube's servers.

DJ Trance Live at Global Gathering 5-25-1996

This DJ Trance (aka Jason Blakemore) playing live at Global Gathering, on May 25, 1995, in Los Angeles, California.

The first time I saw DJ Trance spin, it was at an outdoor rave - I don't remember the name - and the house music area was set up...in a baseball diamond, with the turntables on home plate!

When someone told me Trance was spinning, I was intrigued. First of all, he wasn't spinning "trance" in the traditional sense, in that his records weren't the fast, repetitive rhythms and heavy synths lines typical of goa, progressive and other styles of trance. He was playing breakbeat, house and techno that was FUNKY more than trancy! His mix was noticeably slower than most DJs, in a good way. I think he was playing Top Kat's "Feel Cool" - a track I've loved since that moment. When the bass dropped after the long buildup, the crowd went bananas. This recording also features Feel Cool, and so many other classic gems. It's DJ Trance spinning at Global Gathering, 5-25-1996!

This has got to be one of my all-time favorite live dj recordings. DJ Trance is on point the whole time, and he even treats the dancers to some serious *scratching* - not too common for DJ's spinning that style of music. Not too common because it usually doesn't sound good with house and techno. But, Trance kills it, as the screams from the crowd confirm.

The recording is not without flaws. In its original state, there were a number of pops throughout and a bad skip right near the beginning. Through some surgical editing I was able to minimize or remove those issues. However, near the 42-minute mark there is a break in the DAT for about 2 seconds, then the music starts again but on a different song. I don't remember exactly what happened - it was more than 18 years ago. I suspect the power to my gear was cut. So what to do about this recording? One option was to end the mix right there and upload a 42 minute file. But the remaining 16 minutes were so good, I needed to include them somehow. I ended up leaving a half second-long silence and then fading in the new track, still in time with the original beat. Clearly not perfect but this seemed like a fair compromise to me. At least now people can enjoy the final 16 minutes.
