MIXTAPE MONDAYS by MOARRR 059  - exclusive mix by DJ Schmolli - 

This week's exclusive MOARRR mix was made by the uncrowned European kind of mashups, DJ Schmolli! Since is one of our longtime, friend and brother in crime, it was obvious to ask an exclusive mix from him. We heard him DJing number of times, and all we can say is, Schmolli always delivers and always RAWKS the floor. Of course we asked few questions as well, about mashups, mashups and well, mashups... 

MOARRR: You are one of the prolific mashup producers, how many mashups have you made, and do you remember them all? 

DJ SCHMOLLI: I have released about 350 mashups since 2000 and of course I remember them all. Since I am a well organized person I have instant access to all of them, and you can have to. Last year I made some special “discography” zip-files where you can download everything I ever released with a few clicks directly from my website.

MOARRR:You are also a musician and DJ, not just a bedroom copypaste sound editor. Have you learned something from making mashups what you can use in the 'real musical world'? 

DJ SCHMOLLI:I think it is rather the other way round. My knowledge of musical theory helps me a lot to build my mashups. Back in the day I used to play a couple of mashups live with my band though which was always fun.

MOARRR: SoundCloud recently deleted your account, due to copyright reasons, sadly it's still in the mashup game. Have you ever thought about how to legalize mashups, how to create a legal ecosystem for this scene, and what would be your suggestions for this? 

DJ SCHMOLLI: Well the issues with Soundcloud have been really nerve-wracking. And amongst mine they’ve shut down many accounts of mashup artists in the last few months which is a shame as SC is still the biggest platform to spread your mixes. But to be honest I haven’t thought about legalizing my mashups. There are already good sites like legitmix.com where you can release remixes & mashups and all the copyright owners get paid. But I simply don’t want my fans to be charged quite an amount of money since this concept obviously pays all the artists included which can be quite a number in certain mashups. For now I’d rather stick with being a pirate. Arrr!

MOARRR: Tell us about the concept of this mix!

DJ SCHMOLLI: This mix is really different to what I’ve released so far but for MOARRR I thought I should do something different to show my broad taste in music. It’s a mix of tasty originals and remixes with a kind of disco feel and lots of deep basses. Although there’s only one mashup in this mix you will find a lot of sampled vocals and melodies that you’ve heard from somewhere else in the past, I bet!

Lord Cry Cry

A while back, Ginger Shinobi and I did a DJ gig in Birmingham and we met up with DJ Umb of Generation Bass. We sat in DJ Umb's car while he played us three tunes from a forthcoming album by the mysteriously named Lord Cry Cry. Umb described the album to us as dubstep meets blues. This probably shouldn't work but it did - we liked what we heard.

Well, the album, Live at the CPU, is now out and you should get it.

The opener, Live at the CPU sounds live...rambling flute and keyboards and bluesy piano set the scene for what's to come. I Got the Clap Induced Blues Momma introduces a more dubsteppy bass sound and, indeed, a more traditional blues vocal. Step Nuthin' continues with the dubby bass and remains rooted in old blues, with an early-sixties inflected guitar line and a mid-sixties soul vocal. Short but sweet. Dance of the Moores sounds a little like neo-classical art music with a hint of honkytonk piano - perhaps not as accessible initially as the preceding tunes but I think it'll be a grower. We're back to that psychedelic sixties' soul rhythm with Q-Cut and this leads into the fifties' science-fiction film sounds of SaltburnRedcar. SurfStep brings in a dub reggae riddim and more dubstep flavoured bass but once again has a sixties' sensibility in the keyboards. Schizoid Marimba starts quietly but builds - once again, there's a neo-classical music feel. The title is accurate. Blind Lightnin' Floor is a bluesy sounding title and is, indeed, a bluesy sounding track with a hint of electronica keeping it interesting. I think this is my favourite tune on the album. The closer, Lord High Commander, is an energetic classical music and reggae workout.

It's not the most obvious of albums...but the best music requires listeners to work a little. I suspect that each time you play this album, you'll hear something new. Apparently, the live shows feature a full blues band with the man himself and that's something I'd like to see.
