#SongoftheDay #10 - DJ Fly's 2008 #DMC Championship Set
Ok it's not really a song, but Im posting this throwback because today DJ Fly decided to go ahead and win the DMC world turntable championship for the second time. He took the title back in 2008 against stiff competition in DJ Slyce from the US - but this Frenchman, in my opinion, changed the game and raised the bar for turntablism in 2008. You can tell me Craze was the real innovator, or i.e.Merg had the toughest sets, or call back to Cheese or ISP or Roc Raida or Noise as the guys who really pushed the limits, and you would be right on all counts. But in the modern battle era, Fly is the guy who put the european style front and center and forced fans and competitors alike to deal with it. The composition and precision make this routine the killer it is. It's edited and timed down to the last kick and snare. The scratches are written (yes, I contend that you "write" scratches like you "write" a guitar solo) for maximum effect, and even in the live tape from the world finals in London, DJ Fly from France damn near nails the routine perfectly.
To me this set is up there with the all-time best 6 minute DJ sets. Other favorites of mine include Unkut - Beware of Ze Average Man and Shiftee '09 -
Also I should mention that Netik from France and Rafik fom Germany took home the title in '06 and '07, so I don't mean to say Fly was the first European champ, but I think the debate over the "euro-style" kept those of us stateside from getting on board. This set's undeniable musical power and technical difficulty level, both juggling and scratching, had djs scrambling to adopt some styles from across the pond.

p.s. Congrats to DJ Esquire for representing the US at the world finals. Huge respect for Esqo.
