Witches or Zombies for Halloween?
Besides Sydney being the most recognised city in Australia, we were (believe it or not) once renowned for an exciting nightlife experience complete with morning recovery parties and all. From Monday to Sunday, you could easily find two or three events a night, stimulating the nightlife economy. Many hardworking Sydney siders used the city’s variety of nightspots to unwind after a hard day in the office.
Sydney is getting excited for Halloween mainly because we like to dress up; theme parties are SO FUN! Everybody is in the mood and we’re all aligned in the spirit of having fun! So, by participating in the Halloween festivities this year you are not only having a good time, you are actively participating in the cultural change that the people of Sydney have been advocating for.
There are other reasons for embracing and participating in Halloween besides the simple fun of dressing up. Halloween is a tradition dating back to the Iron Age, originating as a celebration to honour the dead as well as bring in the winter season. Essentially, it was one last party before the weather became too hostile – how cool is that? If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you can come out as Jon Snow because “winter is coming” people - just don’t go too hard on the mead.
If Jon Snow isn’t appealing, then how about becoming a superhero for the night? Black Widow could be a solid and sexy choice. If you decide to show up with a group of friends, you can come as The Avengers! There may be a few raised eyebrows on the bus, but you can always look back when the rest of the city catches up to the hype and say “I was doing that before it was even cool.” Hipster outfit anyone?
Now that you’ve got some cossy inspiration, here’s the information you need to make the most of your Halloween weekend. Friday the 30th until the Sunday the 1st, Sydney will be under the spell of the old pagan tradition of Halloween. We shall unite by enjoying ourselves and going out for an awesome time, and sharing our positive vibes with everybody we meet on the street, for this Halloween weekend. It does not matter where you go this weekend, just join in on the fun. There are events happening in the harbour and on Oxford St. Feel free to extend a nicety or a compliment to a random and let’s change the nightlife culture one step at a time. While you’re dressing up and getting into character, why not expand your musical choices as well? Come get down to the beats of the Caribbean in your best costume at Trick or Treat! We’ll be pumping at 77 Oxford St. (the upper floor of Brighton Up Bar). Come early and get a goodie bag! Remember, no touching unless discussion has been had and the person being touched has consented and please no fighting, even if you’re Batman and the Joker walks by.
