VA: Chesapeake, AIWW mile 5.8, Gilmerton Bridge

The following is from the CG 5th District NTM 50/13.

Mariners are advised that the demolition/reconstruction of the Gilmerton Bridge fender system will be ongoing from 6:00 p.m. until 5: a.m. daily until 03 August, 2014. Barges with cranes will be in the navigational channel. Vessels transiting the waterway and requiring the barges to move for safe transit must provide a two hour advance notice by calling the bridge tender at (757)- 485-5488 on via VHF-FM channel 13. Chart: 12253.

VA: Deltaville, Broad Creek Channel Update

The Broad Creek Channel has recently been sounded and marked. The east side of the channel has several green floats now indicating the edge of the channel. The channel is 8ft deep for a width of 70-75 ft. from a line approximately 25ft off the reds extending east to about 10 off a line between the two greens (in other words right up to the east side of the channel). On the red side, the depth tapers upward slowly to about 5-6ft beside the reds. On the green side the channel comes up more abruptly to 3 - 5 ft MLW. Local knowledge suggests that you pass close to G”1” whether you are entering or leaving Broad Creek because there is no corresponding red marker at the entrance. The channel is holding very well since the dredging two years ago. Even with the unusually low tides that accompany northwest winds, there is a minimum of 6 1/2 ft in the channel.The reported wreck has been located outside of the marked channel and is indicated with a yellow crab pot float.
