Rules were made to be broken… and Dlala had not yet broken out.
After playing Dlala's two newest games, Battletoads and Illusion Island, I wanted to check out one of their earlier ones. Their first, Janksy, was a physics-based puzzler but it's not on Steam. Their second game was Overruled, a platform fighter published by Team17. It clearly represents Dlala still finding their feet but there's a good idea at the core.
Overruled is a simple game in many ways. The characters all have the same body shape, and pardon my frankness but the artistry on display isn't anywhere near what Dlala would be producing a few years later. Your inputs are merely jump, punch, and projectile which also work identically between characters. The main gimmick is the rule-changing mechanic, whereby you can nab cards that spawn in, and activate them to change the parameters of the game.
Now, I only played this single player, which completely locked me out of the main event. You can't do a bot match or even practice, and it seems that random match-ups are hard to come by ten years on, so I'm actually not entirely sure how it works. But these card modifiers can change things from variables like respawn or projectile cooldowns, or point values, to the entire objective of the current match (deathmatch, king of the hill, grab the coins, etc.). This is a clever concept in theory, although again I can't entirely judge how it plays out in a proper game.
My experience of the game was going through the challenge mode aka the only other mode. Each of the nine characters has six levels, the various missions of which play with the card-swapping mechanics inside premade single-screen arenas. These single-player minigames were pretty cool, pushing the concept in puzzley ways, and they gave the goofy stereotype characters a tiny bit more personality via loading screen gags. My favourites were the meek werewolf and the crooked judge (each of them are voiced by Youtubers I hadn't heard of). The Steam trading cards show two other characters, and there are spaces on the challenge select screen but I have no idea how to unlock these other characters if indeed you can.
Although the rule-changing gimmick is a fine idea, it's let down by the slapdash nature of the game as a whole. There's little nuance in the play controls; jump height is constant, and you just slide around the playing field. The characters having no gameplay distinction whatsoever is disappointing, and the aesthetics are amateurish. I admit I never played the game as intended and I'm sure there's some fun to be had in a chaotic game with friends, but this just needed more pizzazz and polish to really stand out.
