F O G (G) Y
for ask game!
As it turns out, I have answered all of these except F. G and Y I have nothing to add to, but I’ll do O again a bunch of times because it’s fun.
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
So, this is an interesting question. Because there are things like, as previously mentioned, “Love & Rockets,” or culty bands that I’ve loved consistently (and occasionally obsessively, reading books about them and stuff) for 20+ years. But fandom I think has a certain connotation. Probably “Community” is something that I’ve been engaging with online and bugging people IRL to watch and all that, since about season 3 was airing? So 12, 13 years? I wasn’t active the whole time, by any means, but I felt a kinship with fellow fans the whole time, in a way that can’t quite be reduced to “I like this TV show.” Movie news/rumors and a rewatch towards the end of last year really brought me back to fanfiction, which in turn had me devouring “Yellowjackets” fic, which made me return to Tumblr after years away. Amazing how dominoes fall…
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
“Howlin’ at Midnight” by Lucinda Williams. Jackieshauna for sure. Opening verse: “Howlin' at midnight, winter creepin' in/ Feel like I've gone and lost my best friend/ My best friend, lost my best friend/ This car is headed down the wrong track again.” A little on the nose, but there you go.
“Dear ol Dad” by Punkin Pie. I mean, this is about a daughter’s fucked-up relationship with her alcoholic father. So. “I was only fifteen/ When he said to me/ Oh, the sun is in the sky but the moon is in your mouth/ He tried to get up but he just fell down” and “I was only eighteen when I fell apart/ All my light inside just started to get dark.” Seems to graft pretty well onto Natalie’s story, plus it’s a catchy punk song which we have reason to believe she likes. “And the bottles in the box just break and shatter/ You’re getting older, but are you getting wiser?/ Now you’re passed out on the front porch/ Please don’t pass this torch.” A lot of Yellowjackets is about pain sticking around and spreading to other people. “I was almost twenty-one/ Living this life with the fight in my blood.” Cue up the mugshot photo.
“Women Tied Up in Knots” by Bongwater. Well, I’m not going to elaborate too much, but…Laura Lee. It’s just a vibe. Something about the way Ann Magnuson says “I know it’s not right, with the pulleys and candles, it’s not right, no, not right, women tied up, tied up in knots, but but but but but but…”
“Nautical Theme” by the Bananas: “Once I heard your siren song/ I was crushed upon the ocean/ But I’ve labored all along/ Under one misguided notion/ That someday you'd come back to me/ I'll go walking in my cabin/ And you'll be sitting there.” Is this about Van pining for Tai? Tai after Van dies? Is it about Shauna refusing to deal with Jackie’s death? Misty yearning for Nat (she does walk into her “cabin” and see Nat sitting there - with a gun)? Lottie yearning for the Wilderness (“Visions from a breathless dream/ Go down with the ship into the deep”)? A lot of yearning in this show.
“Mushrooms on my Ass” by DLIMC. Okay, mushrooms. You might think Lottie, or Misty. But no, this song opens the chorus with “I scrape mushrooms off my ass/ Then I sell them to your dad.” Which is pure Mari.
