Spent the parts of the morning, midday, and early afternoon that were not doing laundry ... modding a Game Boy. Which is much more time-consuming and difficult that I remembered.

But the thing works! After a lot of work and cleaning and fiddling and tweaking...

Think I "discovered" a helpful trick: putting contact cleaner (or fader lube in my case) inside the (usually very difficult) ribbon cable sockets of a DMG. Seems to help a bit.

What I did: Replace shell. Add new screen + button board. Replace screen lens. Solder in new speaker (very clumsy and difficult – partially my fault). Replace buttons and membranes. Meticulously cut and sand new shell to fit new screen kit, and remove mold flash. Clean the new shell to remove plastic sanding debris. Clean old flux off old motherboard. Clean some minor rust & crud off old motherboard with alcohol. Apply fader lube to power switch, volume knob, headphone jack, and new rotary encoder. Assemble & disassemble twice, while trying to get the new screen protector off (pull tab came off) and trying to get proper clearance for the rotary encoder (those are a very tight fit).

Writing it all out, it seems like a lot. And it sure felt like a lot, over several hours and in-between doing loads of laundry.
