“EMERGENCE”
By Douglas Miles
San-Carlos Apache-Akimel O’odham painter, printmaker, and photographer Douglas Miles uses his art to emphasize aspects of Native American youth, Apache culture, and reservation lifestyles. Miles is perhaps best known for founding Apache Skateboards in 2002 after watching his son practice skateboarding and drawing parallels with the Apache warrior traditions of concentration, stamina, and the ability to withstand pain. Continuing his commitment to promoting Native American values through his art, Miles describes this 2015 work as “a reflection of the unheard and unseen reality of Apache and tribal history in America.” “Emergence” is painted on N. 16th St on the front of Phoenix’s celebrated Barrio Café (launched by Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza the same year Miles started Apache Skateboards). @dmiles1_apache @calle16phx @thebarriocafe
