Mae’s Eurovision 2019 Ranking: 41-35
right so i decided that i’d go through my ranking of 2019′s eurovision songs. this took a lot longer than i expected, but i’m satisfied with how things sorted out. keep in mind that this doesn’t necessarily reflect how i felt during the contest, but how i rank the songs given the combination of the recordings, revamps, performances, and my general opinion of them now. i will begin this with my seven least favorite songs. so, without further ado, my ranking.
41: Love is Forever by Leonora (Denmark)
the only time i actually liked this was the day it was announced as the danish song (i wasn’t following any of the national finals other than operación triunfo). after listening to it more than once i found it increasingly annoying and by the time the semi-finals came around, i hated it. the positivity is also kind of sickening, and to continue my slightly emo dislike of this song, i’m pretty sure one of the reasons i hate it so much is exactly why i love hatari, it’s so un-political and non-statement-y, like it’s trying too hard to be neutral.
40: Look Away by Darude and Sebastian Rejman (Finland)
look. you can’t usually get away with putting in a famous dj and calling it good. darude said it himself in some interview, his usual music isn’t very eurovision-y, so it was difficult to create something to fit the venue. he tried, i give him that, and it’s very different from what he normally does, but it just didn’t cut it. (and don’t get me started on the staging, it was awful)
39: The Dream by Roko (Croatia)
yeah this just came off as really bad. the staging and costumes killed me and the whole thing was just hard to watch. the song for me was pretty blah. i do appreciate that roko did sing in croatian, but beyond that, i completely dislike it.
38: Limits by Pænda (Austria)
i actually liked the recording a lot, but the performance was so underwhelming that it brought down its ranking by a lot. it was nothing special, and her voice was not great. i did think it looked really pretty with the lights, but it almost drowned her out. i actually hoped to rank this higher but i realized, it was so forgettable that i couldn’t remember how it sounded without listening to it.
37: Kruna by Nevena Božović (Serbia)
the staging was way to chaotic for me here. there was so much going on and the projections mostly distracted me. the song was not very impressive for me, and while her voice was nice, it wasn’t a standout or anything.
36: Heaven by D-Mol (Montenegro)
oh man, that time period when all we had was that video of them singing out of tune on the sheet music set was awful. i don’t think i gave them enough credit when watching the semi final and it didn’t help that they were second. they actually improved their voices a lot, and the revamp was fairly decent compared to the original. however, they lost a lot of points for not knowing what to do with their hands or faces when on stage and also not delivering a great song.
35: Keep on Going by Oto Nemsadze (Georgia)
big set designer pet peeve of mine? really bad projections. the staging on this was less than desirable. the song did have a pretty cool aggressive edge and i liked the backup singers, but overall, it didn’t impress.
