Over the past year drum & bass duo ZeroZero have been working meticulously to push themselves from emerging newcomers to more established players within drum & bass. Having already secured releases on underground imprints such as Cyberfunk, Mind Tech and Code Recordings, their next output has been snapped up by Ram Records sister-label Program. Monday / Yellow Funk give you a snapshot of what these producers are about; ensuring they don’t fall in line with commercialisation and strip back the genre to its more contemporary roots. And Program presented the perfect home for this single, with their reputation as holding the torch for some of the scene’s techiest production standards. Monday is your entrée, cranking out on ticking hi-hats and a bolstered relay of pounding drums. Each break pulls you into its subterranean levels, with a bassline that twists and contorts itself around the composition. Distorted blows come at you from all sides, driving you alongside its uncompromising rhythm. It soon becomes clear why ZeroZero have been added to the widening Program discography, delivering the type of music that their fan base crave. Yellow Funk takes on a different vibe, with clapping snare and an elevating hook grabbing you between each layer. Clattering percussion sits beneath the mix and with every succession of beats you’re left to rise between its freefalling depths. Snippets of vocal add to its eerie atmospherics, providing a backdrop that gradually pulls you into its tightly woven structure. Technically adept yet never lacking on impact, these attributes become especially clear when the track drpps slightly then once again comes at you with its force. ZeroZero prove their studio might across both tracks and their versatility becomes clear immediately after the single’s first play through. Once again, it’s time to get with the Program… one that has yet to disappoint. #dnb #drumbass #dnb4l#dnb4life
