I was wondering about which is the best way to create a world in DND,do you use reference of sort or made it up
If you can’t create your own imaginary planet from scratch then store-bought is fine
As with all forms of art reference is a key aspect: rivers split, but if you look at real rivers in the world we live in, you’ll know that tributaries join major rivers as they flow downhill - rarely in real life do rivers split and flow in two seperate directions downhill. So when I wrote the city of Mull, which sits on the spilt in a river that divides into the Salin and the Rikney rivers I decided that something special would have happened to divide the river so.
So to answer your question: lil of column a, lil of column b.
This isn’t, “the best way”. But the best advice I can give you, is to let your imagination run wild. Take inspiration from your favourite fantasy worlds (Lord of the rings, Game of thrones, fantasy set Anime, World of Warcraft, etc) use that inspiration to build a world that you like while making it completely your own and unique. And even after all that if you can’t think of something that’s fine too you can always use a store-bought world. It’s DnD as long as you’re enjoying playing it that’s the main thing.
