DNS Changer virus fizzles out without making substantial harm on 'doomsday'

The DNS Changer virus did not cause much of a disaster on the virus ‘doomsday’ following the expiry of a provisional fix. The virus did have the potential to infect millions of computers around the globe. Security organizations did not report any major debacle as most of the internet service providers had taken enough precautions.  Customers were also alerted through phone calls and given instructions to deal with it. 

The problem emanated from a particular malware known as DNS Changer. Cyber rogues had created this malware to redirect internet traffic by taking control over domain name systems (DNS) of internet browsers. DNS Changer affected around 210,000 computers on Sunday, July 8. This included over 41,000 computers in United States, as per an organization report, that was investing the matter.

According to security experts, both internet service providers and users had sufficient time to fix the problem. Though the problem is completely under control, the impact has been subsidized to a large extent.

An organization has taken the initiative to make people aware about this particular malware on the website .www.dcwg.org. According to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), no major incidents were reported and servers were stopped temporarily. Few experts stated that it was still possible to browse the internet by doing a reconfiguration of the DNS access system.

Instead of using the web address, the site’s primary address could be used to access websites. Advanced users can tweak the network settings on their system in order to gain access to public DNS servers like the one operated by Google.
