I know I’m kinda late and all, but I decided to go ahead and draw my own take on Dobson’s Detective Pikachu drawing for Inktober.

Hey, no worries. All the Dob Prompts are always open, I’m glad people still want to do them.

Dobsons later style with the extra wrinkles and odd realistic detailing on cartoon characters bothers the hell out of me. I attempted "fixing" one of the ladybug pages as a fun exercise. Dobson could have had a decent style if he just....idk simplified??

The weird thing about it is he purposely started adding those wrinkles and “detail lines” to his art style because he got a big up his ass about anime going “mainstream” and people doing it better than him. Like it’s not even that he forgot how to draw well, he was basically making himself draw worse thinking it was better because “not anime/manga style”.

That being said, nice work on the art correction. Reminds me of when the blog was more active and I used to do those “Dob Prompts” for people.

So I have this desire to completely rewrite Alex z pirate. Redesign the crew, recreate that horrible world map, give it an actual plot/story.

I feel like out of all of dobson ideas, Alex is the one with the most horribly wasted potential. The characters are so close to being interesting, their horrible personality could have been good fuel for some character arcs where they learn and get better.

Needless to say I been binging one piece and. Alex is like that but created by someone who can't write and let's his hatred of anime get in the way, aswell as his misguided desire for popularity.

What you think? Should I go for it?

If you think there’s something salvageable and worth using, then I say go for it. I actually did a “Dob Prompt” a couple years back for people who wanted to redesign/rewrite Alex Ze Pirate characters. I got a lot of different and unique entires too, so I’d say there’s no problem in remaking the characters and world into something you feel works better.

Btw, if anyone is interested in checking out those entires, look up the “#dob prompt” tag. You may have to sort though some of the different entries for other prompts, but it’s all good stuff.

Here are some of Kim’s most awkward faces. The biggest problems with them are the inconsistent line work (especially with the eyes and lips), distorted perspectives, unnecessary wrinkles, inconsistent shading (Kim’s gray skin changes frequently - I can’t tell if it’s because of lighting or laziness), receding hairlines, misshapen skulls, tiny/wonky ears, and a lack of ethnic facial features. Alongside fixing that stuff, I changed some of her expressions to be less nervous. I understand that she’s in an anxious environment, but it gets pretty boring to look at after a while (and draw). In general, most of these shots are boring. Who cares about her kitchen? Why does she need to be the center focus of nearly every photo? Dobson should build up the uneasiness of the setting by drawing larger photos focusing on the most interesting stuff. It would help if he’d remove the clutter and zoom in at different angles to create a photogenic scene. But Dobson most likely abandoned this project a while ago lol

Unpopular opinion: I actually find Dobson’s art style to be a bit charming at times. Yeah, it’s overlaid with laziness, inconsistency, poor coloring choices, etc but the cartoony stuff can be endearing. However, he can go a little overboard w that too. It need polishing, and that was what I was striving for. Hope you like it 🥸😄

To make Dobson’s self insert less smarmy, I simplified the features, used soft lines, and (of course) gave him a less punchable face. I lightened the colors and painted with watercolor to make everything feel soft. I imagine this version of Dobson to be a peacemaker, maybe in a classroom of some sort? Like, he’s still in school, learning about art, and comes across new challenges everyday or something.

Anyways, my main focus was fixing the faces. The perspective was pretty off on the original, with some features facing the front camera rather than shifting to the side like they were supposed to. The eyes, noses, and mouths were weirdly far apart… also, their expressions were uncanny. It almost looked like the redhead was in complete ecstasy?? While biting the other’s ear no less.. and idk what to call the short haired girl’s expression. So I made them much more playful looking. The skulls were elongated, and the receding hairlines didn’t help. So I corrected that, adding some highlights and shading for dimension. My next big focus was the clothing: Dobson has a habit of adding wrinkles everywhere, even if they don’t make sense. I cut out the excess to make the shirts more fitting. I also removed the short haired girls sagging shirt collar, as it didn’t match with the rest of the tight clothing. I adjust the redhead’s overall strap to fit her shoulder. I also widened her legs, which were emaciated. I then enlarged her tiny hands. Final touch ups were their ears, earrings, and pony tail. Normally, I wouldn’t redraw someone’s artwork, as everyone grows at a different pace, but I’ll make a special exception for Dobson. Love your blog!! It reminds me of what NOT to do as an artist 😆😆😆

Well, this one requires an explanation. I was reading Andrew Dobson’s colouring tutorial, and well, I kind of wanted to see how would the art he used on his tutorial look like if coloured by me, so I decided to give it a go. I didn’t know then, but I made a terrible, costly mistake. First of all, the tutorial pic I found was a small one, and with him nuking his art sites and all that, that meant that there would be no high res B/W pic for me to use. That meant having to re-draw the entire pic. That also meant having to interpret a super pixel-y pic and make it as faithful to the original image as possible. You can probably see the points where I was about to say EFF THIS, but continued since I had already sank a good chunk of time already in thia thing. The changes you see in the pic, mainly the many skulls I added, happened because I wasn’t familiar with his lesbian comic “Patti” where one of the girls wears a skull earring. MEANING, that since I thought it was weird to have a classic looking princess with a skull earring, that meant that I needed to make the skull motif a little bit more significant. Egg on my face and all of that. That also meant that the person that is holding said princess is a girl… and I thought that was totes a guy. Guess you can think that she’s a very masculine looking gal, I dunno. But yeah, what was meant to be a fun experiment slowly became a test of endurance, all due to my own fault, indeed. I guess there’s a lesson to be learned somewhere, but heck if I know what it is. Guess it is “save any pic you may deem important, it may gone someday”. But yeah, pic to the left is my colouring, to the right is the pic from the tutorial, in all its mini glory. If you have read up to this point, you, too, have met a tough test of endurance, and you are worthy of praise.

I wanted to try messing around with Patty and Nadia's expressions. The concept was cute but the delivery was off-putting to me. I really only did expressions and tweaked some small stuff. I am also always open to criticism! The original is first and the one I played with is second.
