Week 2 - INTRO
In her text Politics of Touch, Erin Manning refers to individuation as being "conceptualized as a vehicle that allows being to become, not as matter or form or substance, but as a tensile system, oversaturated with its own potential." (p. 90) this notion particularly resonated with me in reference to contemporary issues in image-based art practice. Particularly in the works of artists such as Maggie Groat, whose current exhibition is a collection of assemblages and collage work created from found materials. Other Visions & Tools for Alternatives explores concepts of space exploration and the limited and exclusionary understanding we have of the universe.
Through her use of appropriated material, Groat creates distinct and separate pieces with varying materials such as wooden fence pieces, found photographs and small mirrors. And within each of these works themselves, we see further fractures of representation in the form of image fragments, and a tension between what is seen and what is revealed (such as an image presented as a verso, and the continual changing faces of the minature mirrors).
For me, this visualization of what I have come to understand as individuation
