Dochugi - an XL Kimono Jacket

We don’t get them often, but dochugi [doh-chew-ghee] jackets are a great option for folks who want a roomier kimono fit.  Like its cousins the haori and michiyuki, dochugi were layered on top of a kimono when the weather calls for it.  But unlike those cousins, the dochugi crosses over in the front with both inner and outer ties that can be adjusted to accommodate small, medium, large and extra-large frames!

In Japan, dochugi are more commonly worn by older women, so the colors and designs tend to be muted and subtle.  But each is unique and works so well as a casual jacket over jeans or even a studio smock for crafters and artisans who want to wear something inspiring while they create.

This is a dochugi style jacket, which crosses over in the kimono style (unlike the haori style which hangs open in the front).  But instead of needing an obi it closes with inner and outer ties, which can be tied loosely to allow for a more generous fit.  Where haori are best for up to a size 12, dochugi can fit up to a size 18+. Fun, bold design - zig zag bands in black, gray and white - in a dochugi style kimono jacket that offers the traditional kimono cross-over in front. Lightweight and semi-sheer, and oh so fun.  Great as a beach cover up? Unfortunately, this jacket has a small blemish right near the front right collar - cover it with a decorative pin and no one will be the wiser! This is the summer version of the jacket, meant to be worn over a kimono even in the hot summer time - layering is the aesthetic even in the heat - but the open weave allows the air to pass between the layers which actually has a cooling effect. This is a dochugi style jacket, which crosses over in the kimono style (unlike the haori style which hangs open in the front).  But instead of needing an obi it closes with inner and outer ties, which can be tied loosely to allow for a more generous fit.
