Character: Del

Ahhh, thank you for this! :D

Rate them: 8/10. I know Del is a super minor character who hasn't come up in ages (barring that amazing recent Insta post), but I think he was just so chaotic and FUN, plus his raps gave a lot to some seriously good songs. I'll always consider him a bigger influence on the band than Paula

Sexuality headcanon: Bi! I don't "kin" as the kids say, but this dude loves ladies and dudes with good vibes. He leans more towards women (result of internalized homophobia perhaps?), but Russel was really his soulmate.

Gender headcanon: Can you be considered cis if you're a ghost? I'm joking of course, but yeah, Del is a cis man. But he embraces Russel's gender fluidity when he spends a few years haunting him.

Favorite moment/random trivia: Perhaps when we got this picture for Phase 4 and people though the blue lighting was a hint that Del was coming back?

But also, my favorite moment is probably in the G-Bitez when he's betting real money with a ten-year-old Noodle. I love to hc that he was just this zany presence who popped out whenever Russel was sleeping or zoned out.

Random Headcanon: Hates Murdoc. Hates him! Always muttering in Russel's head about how he should just deck him in the face. If he wasn't incorporeal, Del would 100% wake up and choose violence every damn day in Kong. Bonus headcanon: I think Russ is the one with impulse control and Del is responsible for like 85% of the expensive, random shit Russel has purchased.

Opinion: He's just THE BEST. I'd love to hear his voice again in Gorillaz, or see him somehow return to the band in the future. Even if that isn't likely to happen, I just think he's neat and funny. More Del content, please!

im the worst person to ask because i have such a shallow range of music i like HAHA buuuut.........i really dig their dub/rock stuff from their first album i really just want a little more of that

What other career paths do you think any/all Gorillaz characters could have taken?

This is such an interesting question! Gotta ponder on this for a mo.

Russel-Honestly, I have a hard time not associating Russel with music as he always seems to be the one to talk about it with an almost spiritual sort of tone. I like to think that he would make a good music teacher, or maybe even end up teaching music to disenfranchised youth somewhere in inner-city areas. Alternately, I’m fond of the idea of him traveling out into western United States and becoming an artist in the dessert. Something about the Mojave Desert and its history of intrepid artistic expression feels very him. I can totally see him in denim overalls combining taxidermy and sculpture to make weird artwork for tourists to find. It’s gotta be an abstract form of emotional expression for Russel.

Noodle-This is providing she escaped the whole “child soldier” thing, came to the UK, and just didn’t became a guitarist for Gorillaz. Museum curator! Hear me out: Noodle sees it as her mission to highlight aspects of cultural movements that tend to get glossed over by Western culture. Catch her stocking up on tools used by South Asian fishing communities, or installing dozens of speakers to play the unique songs of different tribes in North Africa, capturing languages that are rapidly going extinct. Noodle is cultural and intelligent and I think this profession would suit her. Especially if she became a trendsetter and other museums began to follow her lead.

2D-And from that, we go to this shem. Had he not met Murdoc, I’m not certain that Stu would have made it big, not for lack of talent, but for lack of drive. I think he would have been content to live most of his young adulthood out at home, working at Uncle Norm’s for pocket change well into the time that his friends were settling into actual careers. I like the idea of Mechanic Stu (not just because the image of him from your Cadillac fic is still imprinted in my brain). It’s a job where he gets to work with his hands, keep them busy, but it’s a job that does require some critical and often creative thinking. As for his need for artistic expression? Surely if he’s good enough at the job he can make enough to afford a beat-up classic car or two. He probably spends his weekends making modifications on them. A much, much simpler and quieter life for this lad. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Murdoc-Drug-dealer.This is a tough one. Had he not fallen into Gorillaz, would Murdoc have ever really had a steady career? I know that he’s diligent if he stayed with music despite all his failures all the way into his 30s, but I kind of like the idea of him being more of a drifter and a nomad. Without the fame of Gorillaz to inflate his ego, I like the notion of him just forever floating to wherever he can get work, recording jingles for radio commercials for a year, then bartending for a few months before moving into a city and doing well as a line cook, only to end up in writing music and pop culture reviews for some small liberal magazine. You feel me? Given his restless energy, give me a Murdoc who flits through life and samples everything, always a little drunk, but also forever enthralled by how many ways you can be new to something. Is that too hopeful of me to wish for him? Very likely.

How about this-- are there non-Gorillaz albums/songs you associate with Gorillaz members?

Hm...this is such an excellent question! I can think of a few:

“Bless This Morning Year” by Helios gives me wistful 2D vibes in a big way.

“Little Wonder” by David Bowie gives me Murdoc vibes, and in general this song just makes me think of the whole band jamming out!

“The Clouds” by Republic of Wolves will forever make me think of Murdoc thinking that 2D has died after or during Plastic Beach, and that song is just him grieving. 

We all know I love “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin way too much and think it’s the Ultimate Murdoc Song.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the playlist titled “Hail Satan (wip)” on YouTube....that opened my eyes to a LOT of quality Murdoc-themed content, like “Alcohol” by Sisyphus. HOOOOO what a fucking JAM.

D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?

I typically don’t really associate music with my writing, but there are a few exceptions: “Look Good for You” was literally inspired by the song with the same name by Selena Gomez (yeet). My Russdoc fic “Curative” is 10000% inspired by “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin, and basically in any chapter of OT3, if you think you can hear any post-1965 Beatles in there, you’re probably right, especially anything by Lennon. I lack any resemblance of subtly, so if there’s a song i want readers to associate with a fic, I’ll just throw the song in there. It’s 2012 again and songfics are IN!

H: How would you describe your style?

I actually just answered this in my previous ask! Very basic. Infuriatingly simple. I did once have a friend tell me that I tend to write about isolation a lot in my fics, which I hadn’t even noticed, so I guess my style tends to explore individualism and being alone?

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

Oh of course!! I’m currently engrossed in a Good Omens fic that started out as a single action sequence and spiked into a multi-chapter fic of sheer angst (short synopsis: there is an ambush; Aziraphale is grievously wounded; Crowley blames himself; in the following days, they find themselves hindering each other’s recovery). That’s my top priority, but I’m also itching to write some 2doc smut (there will be face-sitting.  2D will be wrecked), and then I’m hoping to get back into OT3 within the next few months because that fic is my baby and I will never abandon it for good. I’m just...dragging my feet about what comes next because it’s going to get dark.

A Pokemon/Gorillaz ask: please assign each member a Pokemon region! If you wanna, maybe specify who (if any) is a champion, elite four leader, regular gym leader, or what class of trainer they are.

2D: Kanto. This one’s easy. A guy living in a little neighborhood in his comfortable bubble of normalcy goes on wacky adventures. Poster boy. The one everyone thinks of when they think of Pokemon/Gorillaz.

I picture him as an Elite Four member, probably the first one you fight. He likes the glory of it, but doesn’t want to handle the responsibilities of being Champion (and frankly isn’t a good enough strategist). Normal type specialist.

Murdoc: Hoenn. Pirates. Mad geniuses. Whales. Nautical setting. The looming threat of environmental catastrophe.

Murdoc would be a gym leader. King of a small town trying and failing to ascend the echelons of Pokemon training. Poison type specialist.

Russel: Unova. This one’s easy, too. Big city setting (based on New York!), funky soundtrack. Fusion (a Del and Russel). Exposing the evils of organizations that work under the guise of good intentions. Ambitious and eerie.

Russel would be an Elite Four member that specializes in ghost types.

Noodle: Johto. The region most reminiscent of her homeland. A classic Pokemon generation I can picture her playing on her Game Boy. Equal parts cheery and intimidating. A sequel with fresh, novel ideas (much like Demon Days).

Noodle would be Champion, and she would specialize in electric types, but she’d throw some curveballs at you (fighting types, unique move sets, etc), too.
