God, Doctor Who really is unique.
Look at the Daleks.
I can't even think of another example of a race so powerful and so utterly devoted to destroying all life except for themselves (apart from the 40K Imperium, but they're distinctly different in favouring conquering over genocide).
And the show builds them such that they have social, genetic, and even technical enforcement of those ideals. It makes this race as monstrous and homogeneous as can be realistically imagined.
Then it spreads the race and the story across all of space and time, so there is opportunity for many individual mutations od more humane creatures among the Daleks. They are *always* destroyers, but it never feels like a shaggy dog story. It's so perfectly crafted that the stories always mean something.

I was thinking about Chibnall's comment about 13th being a good starting point for new fans and it dawned on me: maybe what he meant by that wasn't that he wouldn't give us references that only old fans would understand. Maybe what he meant by it was a slower pace and character progression for the Doctor. For 13th to go from 'ball of sunshine' to 'dangerous alien last of her kind who's lived for so long' he needs to slowburn it, maybe it's why some old fans find it jarring? random thought dkdhsh
I do kind of feel that we're in a slow burn for the characters, and I get some of the frustration but I'm willing to wait on it.
I do find that in some episodes there's a bit of kid gloves treatment going on but not for all, especially the powerful moments.
Chibnall is very good at getting general audiences and making them stick to the show, judging by the ratings.
I also rewatched Broadchurch and select episodes of Torchwood, and what struck me were the raw emotions of his characters.
His characters run the gamut of emotions, so I find series 11 interesting as a contrast. I remember one of the Verity Podcasters mentioned that they're expecting Chibnall to be very standard at first and then once he's comfortable we'll see something.
I think I prescribe to that theory, I will say I feel the team beginning to gel a lot more, and they've done a lot of experimental things re: camerawork, and dealing with historicals. It's the next three episodes I am really excited to watch, and especially thebNew Year's special.
I feel like for series 12, we'll slowly see things return to form with some returning characters too!
Doctor Who with a budget feels wrong.
If your name is Eleven there's a high chance I will like you.
At this point I’m far more excited about the Doctor Who Christmas special than I am about Christmas.
