Soft hums and beeps greeted her as she quietly entered each room, chart in hand, gentle blue eyes taking in what machines and reports could not tell her. The early morning rounds, the ones she did mostly alone, had become her favorite. Early mornings held promise usually, set the tone for the rest of the day, and Samantha had always been one to love them, even as a girl.
“He rested fairly good all night, managed to keep his supper down too.” One of the nurses, Kerri, informed her as Sam chose to just glance into room 22, one of her favorites current residence.
“How’s his O2 sats?” She asked, flipping through AJ’s chart to see his last recorded set of vitals.
“Stable, never dropped below 96%.”
“Good. Let’s go ahead and get another X-ray of his lungs, a follow up from our friendly neighborhood pulmonary doc and see about getting Mr. AJ home in time for that all important birthday he has coming up.”
“Sounds good.” Kerri commented, typing away on the computer with the orders. “322 has a fever still, 325 is all set for discharge later today and 326 is finally settled down.”
“Busy night eh?” Sam couldn’t help the smirk that tugged on her lips while she updated charts and sipped on her ever present cup of coffee.
“It was a full moon, you do the math.”
“Is that sarcasm Mrs. Caroway? Directed at your favorite fellow of all time? Because I’m hurt, no, wounded at your tone.” Sam teased.
“Fellow of all time is pushing it Grayson, you have some ways to go before you fill O’Malley’s shoes.” Kerri’s light tone took any sting the words may have away.
“Yeah yeah, whatever, you love me.” Sam retorted with another grin, grabbing the last chart to take to the lounge with her. She had a peds recert tomorrow morning, so that meant studying today between rounds and visits with her patients.
A few hours and one floor later, Sam was finally pushing the door to the small lounge open, more coffee and possibly inhaling some fruit the only things on her mind when she was tackled by the one person she didn’t want to see.
“Just give me two minutes! Please!”
“You don’t even work here Kiriakis- I don’t have to give you shit.” Samantha replied cooley, pushing the brunette off of her and walking to the coffee pot.
“Look, I get that you’re still hung up on her, but she left- she’s not coming back Sam, in fact she’s probably already moved on-” Rory Kiriakis was persistent, if she was anything.
Sitting her mug down slowly Sam took a breath, closing her eyes to keep calm. “Shut up Rory.”
“She’s not even in state! It’s been months! You freaking switched hospitals, hell, you switched specialties!” Rory exclaimed, tossing her hands up in the air. “For what? To start over? Because last I checked, you have to actually move on in order to do that.”
“I’d advise you to leave before I alert security. “ Sam stated finally, keeping her temper curbed as much as she could. “I have moved on Kiriakis, just not with you.” the blonde added, she hadn’t moved on with anyone, not that the intern needed to know that. “I messed up my life once, yes, my ex-wife isn’t here, yes, I switched specialties after my divorce, because news flash, I had a fucking life changing event happen to me and I took a good hard look at how much I had screwed my life up.“ She took a breath. “I switched hospitals because it was the right thing to do, given how my field is Pediatrics.”
She calmly grabbed her mug, lifted it to her lips and took a drink. “I’m only going to say this once more Kiriakis– leave me alone and get out of my hospital.”
“Does she know you’re still in love with her?” Rory asked, throwing up a hand to silence Sam’s retort. “I’m leaving, call me when you realize she’s not coming back.”
“ ‘Her’ name is Aurelia, not that you can pronounce it correctly.” Samantha replied curtly. “Don’t let the door hit you on the ass dear, Lord knows that’s where your intelligence lies.” She internally sighed when a few of her fellow doctors entered the lounge, forcing Kiriakis out.
