Harold practice instead of drawing my actual oc
hihi im here from the radar teehee... (the july 24th fanart )! i was wondering if you would ever post a speedpaint of those pieces..? or if you could describe a process for those pieces because Wow those drawings are Amazing. your art in general is so so so gonjeous the colors are hypotnizing im drooling but for those pieces specifclaly... i dont think ive ever seen anyone capture that fever dream esque , memory buried deep in ur subconscious vibe so perfectly before ... and i was wondering how you did it.... becuase wowie zowie ong #flames .. thank you!
thank you for the compliments <3 I'm happy cause these were exactly the eerie feelings I was going for.
unfortunately I didnt record a speedpaint for these! I'll try to break down my process as best I can from what I remember.
first, what I do before I start any project is make a mood board/reference board on pureref (which is a program I heartliy recommend!), in this case I saved a lot of pics that had the same vibe (strong flash camera pics taken in forests or nature to see how the light works on bodies and foliage). they don't have to always be direct references, sometimes they can also just infer a vibe or a palette.
I knew I wanted the three pieces to have completely different body parts "photographed" so I had to keep them coherent by using roughly the same palette, graphical elements and effects.
I used another fanart of Adam I had done previously as reference to draw his features, for him as well as most of the characters I draw (unless there's an actor involved) I tend to never use a single model but rather a mixture of multiple faces (for Adam even some female faces!) as well as something from my imagination alone. I like making up new folks and I have a very specific way I picture these book characters.
the abstract/graphical parts I added last to every piece as something that could unify everything + symbolize the Magician card in different ways.
I think most of the eerie effect done successfully is in the post-production after the proper painting phase. for example I added all these textures that fake the "old camera" effect, like the lights close to the pov and the motes of dust, the grainy filter (a layer of 50% grey + noise filter set to I think linear light blending mode with low opacity) and I added a layer of blur and masked most of it - just leaving out the parts in the foreground that would be most affected. there's also probably a very slight chromatic aberration done by isolating rgb channels (in layer style) and shifting the whole layer just a little.
I hope this is helpful! TLDR honestly it sounds clichè but reference is key when you want something to look convincing. If you want to paint something and make it look like a fever-dream inbued old camera pic you need to understand what that means and what all these pics have in common first.
I just noticed I never showed off this one art I did while making the most recent chapter of my webcomic. I'm tryna do these lighting tests to get better at doing lighting and stuff for my comic, IDK if it helps or not but it probably is useful at getting more cohesive color schemes. I'm trying to not pick colors super arbitrary anymore and stuff like i did in early chapters. I think its kinda sorta paying off.
I'm using cliping masks and blend modes recently to make quick and eazy lighting. useally its a few on the characters to add light and shadow basically I
>clip the layer with the blend mode to the layer that contains the characters
>use airbrush to add the color (gives a nice subtle gradient)
>use layer mask to erase the parts I don't want (almost always on the shadow layer) you can also just erase it on the layer if you don't know about layer masks or if its not in whatever software you use but with layer mask if you fuck up you can undo it
>add a layer or two with a subtle blend mode to tie the image together (useally one that can effect the pure black lineart like screen or hard light)
personally i think it really enhances the scenes it makes it feel more atmosphery, the orange lighting looks so good on Leon's hair mmmm (also just realized i fogor to color Leon's eyes and mouth aaaaaa)
Also while showing off this art because this basically turned into a big behind the scenes post it also made me feel like showing off this ref sheet which i never have actually done before now that I think about it. (i ended up simplyfying the bandage on Red's face for the comic, this does make more sense as a bandage for a serious injury compared to the actual one looking like a shitty band-aid but its distractingly detailed and it would be annoying to draw 50 times)
normally I also draw a back veiw but I was lazy and these outfits are pretty straightforward anyway i'm sure I'll never forget to draw a back veiw in sceneroes where it is important (forshadowing~)
maybe I'll show more refs at some point in the future lol tho some are pretty old and bad (if yall want me to show any in particular I probably can)
anyway this was originally just gunna be the first image but turned into a sorta rant tutorial how fun, should i make more posts like this, who knows, if people find it intresting maybe
How’d you do the gold parts of Roman’s shirt?
oh man, i was having a lotta trouble with that today but sort of got the hang of it?
if you follow my instagram i have a super quick video for it but here’s the more detailed step by step
1. Base color
2. Random dark splotches (optional)
3. Textures (I used a chalk brush but I suppose you can overlay a paper texture on top for a similar effect)
4a. Add the design you want
4b. The lace ribbon on Roman’s top has a main wavy.. protrusion(? idk what to call it, the part where the embroidery sticks out) and another much less noticeable one which is just a couple of horizontal lines that go through the whole thing, so I made a separate layer for that other design
5. Add a bunch of highlights on top of the design
6. Copy, paste, and distort until you get a whole length of the lace ribbon then play around with the layer settings to make it shinier and whatnot
yee! ill put this under a cut bc its long and features eye/body horror
also this turned more into me rambling abt using uncanny valley srry if its not much help fjdsjf
Hi y’all here’s a whole little ditty about skin tone ramps (the superficial ones)
So start with a 2560x256 canvas. (it’s estimated to be sized down by 10% on the width to make it square. I tried even squeezing text to 10% and it works for the most part but it’s also nice seeing what you’re going to be looking at.)
1. Change the font, text or colors or gradients to whatever you’d like. Flatten or merge the layers together (if you have layers set. I only say merge first since I have a gradient layer.)
2 or 3. Hit resize. (make sure proportional resizing is unticked.) and set it so they’re both 256.
2 or 3. Rotate the image clockwise.
4. Save as PNG
5. Open the skin in skininator or s3pe (i use s3pe on this existing skin). Find the IMAG tagged entry and right click > replace with your new PNG. And Save!
6. Save and look at that stuff in your game!
The dot on the skin panel at the moment seems to pick its color by dartboard so there’s no guarantee it will always be the background color.
Someone who knows more about this, tell me for sure 😬 😬 😬 😬
Also: this doesn’t change the actual skin ramp, just how it shows up in the CAS menu

tip: if you don't want to count how many gifs are in your readmore gif hunt, save it as a draft and click the corner that will show you the preview on your blog. right click anywhere on the page and choose view page source. then press ctrl+f, search for ".gif", hit enter until you find where your gif hunt starts (i find this easiest if there's text like "this gif hunt has ###" is at the beginning) and subtract the number of gifs before hand from the number of gifs after
this takes about 45 seconds when you aren't good at it, 10-20 once you are.
hi sorry i might sound stupid or dumb but how do you keep your blog posting for the whole day? i mean, i know its because of the queue but how do you exactly make it post for the whole day?
umm on the queue page there's thisit gives you an option of how many posts you want in a day (the highest you could go is 50) and in what period of time you want them posted. in my case, its 12am to 3pm because that's when i'm away from tumblr. there's also this option before you reblog something where you can set the date and time of when you want it to be posted:
