Hey, what is your opinion on sex in the Wizarding World? What is their approach to it, their perception? Are they more prudish than Muggles?

I think they are much more open than Muggles. They even have too loose a perception of sex. Youngsters are quick to start exproqing these swere lives (left largely unsupervised at Hogwarts).

i have this post about sexuality in the wizarding world and this post about gender in the wizarding world that kind of discuss this. i also talk about how the wizarding world loooooves greek and roman shit here, which is kinda related.

honestly i'm not even sure if i answered this question.

I don't think a prudish/open dichotomy works for how I perceive sexuality functioning in the wizarding world. in the gender in HP analysis I talk about how misogyny as displayed by characters in the text is done by sexually policing women. this is done more subtly in the way that we see so many housewives and so few adult women who demonstrate sexuality outside of marriage or pursuit of marriage.

I think in the contemporary WW they still have this idea of women as oversexed beings. additionally, I don't think they view gender and sexuality exactly like we do. they don't have sexuality as an identity, since that emerged in the real world in the early 1900s. 100 years ago, heterosexuality was a disorder. in the 30s it became what we know it as today. so i don't think it's a stretch to say the WW, with their slow change, would not engage with sexual identity.

on top of that we see no sex ed in the books. now, i don't think jkr would have put sex ed in the books even if it existed. that's the issue with these being children's books. either way, there is a distinct conservatism in WW family structure. women stay home, men work, women who work are desexed.

but dating seems super acceptable for the youth at hogwarts. the trio all have crushes and romantic relationships, and this is painted as natural. the only comments come from men about women being promiscuous. it's heavily implied at the start of DH that ginny was going to sleep with harry, who was a virgin, and the way she was framing it as a gift makes me think the implication was that she was also a virgin.

i assume it is up to the parents to teach their children about sex. i can imagine molly telling ginny it's okay to have sex outside of marriage, since it's clear molly and arthur had a passionate relationship before their marriage, with the stipulation that it should be with someone you are going to marry. this fits medieval perspectives on sex—sex between a betrothed couple was socially acceptable.

when young women are criticized for dating it's about being with multiple men. it wasn't uncommon irl for lower class (which is the majority of people) women to be pregnant when they married, specifically in the early modern period. this extends into the victorian era, which pureblood culture is obviously influenced by.

within committed relationships having sex was seen as fine and normal for the commoners, but having a baby out of wedlock was The Worst, since we see literally not one bastard in the whole series. jkr goes out of her way to make sure all of the kids are conceived within marriage.

for upper class/pure blood women, virginity was important. i expect there were magical "virginity tests", that became more frequent as pure blood supremacy evolved. this is because even association with Muggle borns made a person "dirty", so knowing the woman was not discerning enough to protect her virtue would imply bad judgement & therefore dirtiness.

i think the human body was not sexualized in the same way as we do, however, because we see multiple mixed-sex places people get naked. the prefects baths, for one, and it seems like the locker rooms as well. the girl's dorms are not mixed-sex. to me this says the context dictates how the naked body is viewed. the bedroom holds an intimate context, but a public bath and locker room do not.

i like the idea that some rituals involved nudity, and that nudity was seen as a positive and natural state. when harry dies he wakes up in the afterlife naked. when voldemort is resurrected he's naked, and this seems like not a big deal. since emotional magic is powerful i think sex would be used in some rituals.

all of this to say, i think the hogwarts students would be doing a lot of hand and mouth stuff. i think penetrative sex was very significant, and carried an importance in the WW mainstream longer than it did in the MW. this is part of why i like to imagine james as a virgin when he and lily get together, and her not. it's interesting bc it reinforces the stereotype of Muggle born women being slutty, so there's that extra tension.

the idea of sacred virgins is interesting too, not for religion, but for magic ritual, and on the flip side, sacred sex workers.

so... yeah. in some contexts nudity was more acceptable, but general attitudes around sex were, on their face, somewhat similar to ours. the motivation for purity grew w pure blood supremacy, so perhaps before that movement open sexuality was more common.

my opinion:

I think Lily and James had that type of love that grows on you over time. It was not a sudden explosion, although it may have seemed so from the outside. They grew into their feelings, the more they developed individually, the more they fell in love with each other.

Your descriptions of Lily's outfits are so great I can't stop imagining them. 🩷🌸💓

hi!!! ty ty. i have a pinterest board dedicated to lily's wizarding world outfits. these are most on the fancy side, and mostly what lily would wear lol, but i think it's a good representation of wizarding fashion.

i think they like to harken back to the past, so we'll see a lot of silhouettes from across history. perhaps 10th-12th century fashion, since that's when hogwarts was created, and because within that time period we have the big, billowy sleeves that hang which feel very witchy. also greek and roman styles, tho it's harder for me to imagine that in a modern context.

clothing was very colorful in the middle ages, and the way it's told in the books, wizards seem to love color. a lot of embroidery. i think not being ostentatious is more a young person thing. james wears a lot of black because he's teaching.

anyway here's a mood board of magical 90s lily fashion inspo. the darker color palette is partially 90s influence, but i think there would be more color than is represented here. i think she's go for flowy a-line cuts and wear slips underneath for layering. a lot of wearing the robes open. since it's the 90s a lot of velvet and floral prints.

the blue dress with the collar and frills on the end of the sleeves are the closest casual wear i can find. i can see her wearing exactly that.

I don't know about you, but I always imagine James as someone with a sarcastic sense of humor.

Don't get me wrong, I love my sweet Labrador James, but I always picture him (especially in Year 7 and after school) as someone very sarcastic, with a crooked smile. Epic phrases, sassy, a bit mean but in a charming way.

I imagine that when someone says something stupid, he and Lily look at each other and she starts laughing as soon as she sees James raise his eyebrows.

Overall, James always had this "I don't give a shit" attitude in my head. When you got to know him better, it turned out that he was a very caring person who cared about the feelings of his loved ones.

My headcannon - POTTER FAMILY

I always imagine James' mother as a very elegant woman with an aristocratic charm. After all, he was from the Black family. The type who doesn't raise his voice to be heard. She wore elegant dresses with pearls. Her nails were perfectly done and her hair was tied in a perfect bun. Red lips. Like Grace Kelly but with black hair. Even though from the outside she seemed very cold and inaccessible. She was an incredibly nice and empathetic person. Who just had hard skin.

James' father was completely different. he was crazy, full of life, energy and humor. He was always in a hurry and had a larger than life personality (like James). He drew from life like a lemon. He was always busy with some adventure, he couldn't sit still. He never gave a damn about how he looked, his shirt or hands were always dirty. He spent his days in his workshop, where he invented strange inventions and potions.

I think James was a lot like his father, but he had his mother's charm and posh.

James was their dream son. After many attempts, miscarriages and after they lost hope, he appeared. They were quite obsessed with him and were very protective. Mrs. Potter was especially sensitive about her only son.

When Sirius moved in with them, their family was already complete. They loved him as much as James. Mrs. Potter immediately asked Sirius to call her "Mom" when he moved in with them.

The Potters had dogs. They loved animals and had 5 dogs that they named after their favorite Quidditch players.
