VD: Charly, a yellow Labrador, laying on a black couch and facing the handler. She is offering her paw to the handler who then holds a set of nail clippers near her paw and makes a click sound before Charly gets the food that was dropped in front of her as a reward. End VD.

Charly really hates getting her nails trimmed, doesn't like to have her feet touched, doesn't like the dremmel sound, hates the sound the clippers make when they cut so

I've been working on clipper desensitization by clipping a piece of her kibble by her paw

It makes the same noise but this way it's a direct reward and I can even place the clippers directly on top of her nails and still get the same replicated sound without needing to actually clip her nails

About halfway through I also started asking her to give me her paw so we can start building up the steps for cooperative nail trims

Charly is three today!

And like every year previous, she's taught me a very valuable lesson

We nearly lost her early this summer to a bacterial strain that popped up in the lake and triggered muscle myositis and organ failure

We genuinely did not think she'd make it through to her birthday, at least not as herself

But it taught me to truly treasure every moment, and that the passage of time is not something to mourn, but something to see beauty in

Every day older is another day lived

And today marks her 1096th day of a beutiful life lived, and I can't wait to see what the next bring us

A very nice trip home!

Lots of dogs (6), lots of snow (~16"), very cold (average of 2°F), and extremely gorgeous views through the blueberry fields and in the woods!
