I will be posting about my experience with my personal dog (recovered reactive), experiences with client dogs, and otherwise just trying to spread positivity around dogs and obsessing over dogs and their jobs

Before we truly dive into anything I want to say that I will not judge you for using any tools, however I prefer not to use aversive tools in training my personal dogs (my dogs are, however, conditioned to pagers so you'll often see ecollars on them)

Okay what other word for "heel" should I use while I teach heelwork? I'm already using "heel" as a stationary command where it can be reasonably sloppy. I need a different word for the clean movement.

#i use “heel” for loose/sloppy/informal heel for all of ours and then everyone has separate cues for more formal heelwork #rossi uses au pied #bella is a specific tongue click because i ran out of new words for her lol #stella is “pup”#Charly is “with me”#max is “woah” (although max doesn't really do much of any formal heeling. he's just a chill dude)#oh bella also uses “bubble”#which started as a nickname and ended up just being a cue for heeling which she kind of just decided on herself #for any new additions i think I'm just going to start using a different language because bella has exhausted my vocabulary 😅

So I don't frequently do euthanasias, my manager is normally the one doing the appointment itself (we're a very small clinic so we just don't have many in the first place (lots of DOAs though that I am normally the one preparing))

But yesterday I was the shift lead with just trainees under me (and obviously I'm not sending baby VAs in there. Like yeah they need to learn but this is the kind of thing that I would never push someone into unprepared) so I'm in the room talking to owners and making sure they understand the whole process and the mom is saying how they just got her groomed last week so that she can be the most beutiful pup at the crematorium (🥺)

#pet loss tw #euthanasia #the vast majority of pets dont get the opportunity to be well pampered before moving along and it always makes me misty eyed when the owners #have the privilege of getting it all planned out so they're as comfortable as possible #it also made for some perfect fur samples to send home with them right away which seemed like a personal victory to me #i personally normally prepare two fur samples (one natural/freshly clipped and one gently washed) so that way they can get any memorial #pieces made in the future if they want and they still have something personal that smells like them #but this ended up perfect #i did have one of the trainees come in for the prints (voluntarily) after the owners said their goodbyes and made their way out #(we always allow them to stay as long (or as short) as they want)#so they watched how i did the prints and i explained the steps that we go through afterwards #(cleaning the pet with wipes if there's any messes (nothing in this case). hair/fur samples. paw & nose prints. where the cremation bags are #(and explained why im very glad we partner with the company we do because the cremation bags they supply are very nice and actually give the #animal their respect vs the bags a lot of other companies use))#overall honestly the perfect pet in my opinion to go over this kind of thing with (if there's ever a “perfect” situation)#much better than my first one (ruptured spleen) (not a situation i would wish upon anyone)#i know that a lot of people would just throw the trainees into the situation to “get used to it”#but in a dying field with fewer and fewer well experienced individuals that just is not the way to go about it #with this sort of thing at least #i mean I'll throw them into mopping up pee and distracting pets during vaccines but like. you cannot possibly be complaining about VAs not #sticking with the industry longterm and then turn around and fucking traumatize them #like i get that in some situations you just need an extra set of hands and you cant really take your time #but when i have the ability to ACTUALLY TRAIN the *trainee* and make sure they understand the hows and whys #and make sure that they know they have the space and time to take care of themselves #then I'm going to fucking do it #anyway

It's very interesting how the topic of gastric torsion/bloat and prevention varies from breed group to breed group

Like some groups will advocate for frequent, smaller meals to limit how much the stomach regularly stretches (daily food divided into 2-4 meals)

Others will say to do one large meal immediately before bedtime

Some will say to wait multiple hours before exercise

Others will say 30 minutes is plenty

Some want to get a preventative gastropexy done as soon as possible

Others say that bloat is purely genetic and if none of the dog's lineage had issues with it, then don't worry about it

It's just very interesting

#i personally would absolutely get a gastropexy done #if they're getting spayed/neutered then it would be done then #otherwise if they're staying intact (at least for the foreseeable future) then i would look into getting it done on it's own #I've had a couple bloat scares with rossi and it is Not Fun #and then i prefer two main meals a day with a smaller portion for lunch (normally in the form of some sort of training/grooming or food toy)#and i start young puppies on 10-15 minutes of crate/pen/cuddle time after meals just to build up the habit of being calm after meals #(because we learned the hard way with Charly that it is VERY difficult to break an established habit of immediately running out the door to #potty after eating)#and then we just work up that time slowly to be 1-2 hours of quiet time after meals #once they're in the habit of it it's very nice #and i rarely have to actually crate/pen anyone after meals anymore because they know our routine #only times i have to is if we have guests over (outside of close family) and sometimes their first 1-2 meals together after a while apart #(it's very exciting to them lol)#and i honestly establish this with any breed #yeah it's obviously more of a risk for some breeds than others #but it can happen in any breed #and especially with us having a wide range of breeds in the family it makes me much more comfortable if EVERYONE knows that it's quiet time #after meals #couldn't really expect rossi and max to want to lay down if maverick and stella are wrestling around afterall

Just did a heel work session with the girlies and what I found SUPER interesting is that Rossi's right side focused heel is textbook perfect aside from being like 4 inches too far back

Her left side on the other hand?
