Y/N Pov
Grayson and I have been inseparable since we were kids, so it wasn’t too surprising when we started dating 5 and a half years ago. However, it was surprising when I got pregnant by my now ex-boyfriend when I was 17. I was 3 months pregnant when we decided to call it quits since we were never really in love; although we did have a love for each other. Since he didn’t want to step up and become a dad, he signed away his rights, and we went our separate ways. It was a mutual breakup, and things ended on decent terms.
Grayson, however, still dislikes my ex very much for leaving me after he got me pregnant and not stepping up as a father. Since Gray and I are best friends, he took care of me while I was pregnant and helped me and my baby boy, Maverick, through everything. He took up the role as Maverick’s dad when he never had to, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I truly love Grayson.
Maverick is now 8 years old and very aware that Grayson isn’t his biological father. Having said that, Maverick still happily calls Grayson his dad with no objections from Gray or myself. It warms my heart to know that they both care for each other as much as they do.
“Gray, can you get the camera ready to start recording,” I ask him as a smile grew on my face quickly. He smiled back and got up to go grab the camera. I giggled as he ran through the hallway with a cheesy Christmas sweater on while holding on tightly to his Santa hat to keep it from falling to the carpeted floor. Dork.
While walking up the stairs, I softly ran my fingers across the red and gold garland that twisted around the banister. As I reached the top of the stairs, I softly walked into Maverick’s bedroom after gently pushing his bedroom door open. I smiled as I saw the soft grin on his face as he slept. Precious. I shuffled soundlessly to his bed and ran my fingers through his soft hair.
“Come on, Mav. You have to open presents now,” I tell him. Maverick quickly jumped up while stumbling a little. I grabbed his torso and pulled him back to his bed. I tickled his sides, and laughter erupted from him. I laughed along with him as he kicked his legs.
“Momma, stop it! Quit it!” he said between laughs. I shook my head and threw my hands up, a huge smile playing on my face.
“It’s not me! It’s the tickle monster!” I exclaimed playfully. He giggled and tried to calm down. He smiled tiredly and stood up on his bed. “Piggyback ride?” he asked hopefully.
“I’ve got you, Mav,” a voice spoke out from behind me. I jumped and spun around to see Grayson leaning against the doorframe beaming at us. Grayson walked over to Maverick’s bed and crouched down, allowing him to jump on his back and latch onto him. Grayson grabbed onto Maverick’s legs to prevent him from falling. Without hesitation, Grayson bolted out of the bedroom and started racing down the stairs with Maverick a giggling mess. I watched after them and laughed while shaking my head.
“Be careful, babe!” I yelled after the two boys. Grayson instantly slowed down as he approached the end of the stairs, recalling how he fell the last time considering it was hardwood rather than carpet. I reached the bottom of the stairs to see Grayson dropping Maverick onto the couch playfully. I walked up behind Grayson and wrapped my arms around his torso while interlocking our fingers. His finger rubbed across the engagement ring sitting comfortably on my finger. I beamed into his back as he slowly lifted my hand up to place a gentle kiss on it.
“Maverick, sit up on the couch, so we can get you all of your presents,” I spoke out. Maverick pulled himself up and grabbed the fuzzy blanket off of the back of the couch. I pulled myself away from Grayson and made myself comfortable on the floor. I slowly extended my arm under the tree and grabbed one of his gifts.
“Momma, hurry up!” Mav shouted out while dragging out each word. Grayson snickered and I shot a playful glare in his direction.
“Calm down buddy,” Grayson said through laughs, “we have all day to open presents.” Maverick folded his arms and scoffed. Grayson raised a brow and crossed his arms, mimicking the 8-year-old.
“Daddy, we need to hurry, so you can open your present!” Maverick stated as if it was the most important thing in the world. My head shot up, and I flashed Maverick a look. He giggled and threw his hands in the air, “I won’t tell him, Momma! It’s a surprise!” I chuckled and nodded.
After giving Maverick all of his presents, he ripped through the wrapping paper of his gifts and continuously thanked us with every present he opened. As he crumbled up all of the wrapping paper, I placed one more in his lap. He looked confused but quickly tore open the present. He looked at it confused for a moment, but his eyes instantly lit up as he realized what it was. His eyes shifted between me and Grayson in complete awe.
“Are you guys serious? Really? Like for real?” he shot out one question after the other. I looked at Grayson and saw him smirking.
“What is it, buddy?” Grayson asked Maverick, whose eyes were filling with tears. Maverick turned around the gift to show to the camera, Grayson, and me. I smiled fondly at the pictures of Maverick sitting with a happy husky puppy at the local animal shelter. Along with the picture of Mav and the puppy was a small picture of the husky beside a sign stating “Adopted” in bold letters. I grinned and Grayson nodded slowly. Maverick stood up, crawled into my lap, wrapped his arms around me, and sobbed into my neck.
Grayson and I both let out small laughs at Maverick’s reaction. I rubbed his back as he kept mumbling about how he would be really upset if it was fake. I reassured him that the little puppy was, in fact, coming home later that day which caused him to cry even harder. After comforting the delightedly emotional child, I pulled his head up to whisper in his ear.
“Do you wanna give Daddy his gift now?” I spoke quietly into his ear. He pulled back and nodded his head furiously. I smiled, “Grab it from under the tree,” I told him although he was already halfway under the big tree. I looked up at Grayson and smiled so hard my cheeks hurt. Grayson scooted down into the floor and wrapped one arm around my shoulder. He brought his hand up to rubbed my cheek, and I leaned into him. He smiled down at me pulled my head closer to his. Grayson slowly dragged his lips across mine, both of us smiling like idiots.
“Excuse me,” Maverick said sassily. Grayson and I both looked at Mav who had a soft smile playing on his face. He scurried to sit right in front of me and Grayson while beaming up at us. Mav gradually reached out to give Grayson his gift. Maverick was bouncing around on the ground giddily. I’m pretty sure he was more excited than Grayson. I pulled Maverick into my lap and wrapped my arms around him while pressing kisses to his head.
Grayson reached up and tenderly pulled Maverick’s head closer to his to press his own kiss against the top of the boy’s head. Gray silently started pulling at the wrapping paper to see a plain cardboard box. His eyebrows furrowed as he started tearing the tape off the thin box. He opened the box and started pulling out the tissue paper. As he reached the bottom of the box, he froze completely. Grayson’s eyes started to fill with tears along with mine.
His face held a shocked expression and soon enough he was pulling Maverick into his own arms. Maverick shoved his head into the crook of Grayson's neck. I scooted closer and rubbed Grayson’s back with tears falling down my cheeks.
“Will you adopt me, Daddy?” Maverick mumbled when he pulled his head out of Grayson’s neck. Grayson looked up and rubbed the tears from Maverick’s cheeks. He smiled at the young boy and nodded his head. I wiped away the tears from Grayson’s face, and he looked at me with twinkling eyes. He grabbed both of my cheeks and kissed me with the most love and care he could.
“Is this real? I really get to adopt him? I get to be his dad?” he asked me, scared I would tell him it was all just a prank for the video. I nodded my head that was still encased between his big hands.
“You’re already his dad, babe. Just have to make it official. You’ve always been his dad,” I tell him sweetly. He continues nodding at each word, new tears quickly falling down his face again. I smiled as I wiped them away again.
“Hug me,” Mav said while extending his arms and pushing his way between us. Gray and I laughed and squeezed Maverick between us, soon becoming a tangled mess.
Grayson and I eventually finished opening our presents and cleaning up all of the wrapping paper that was scattered across the whole room. Maverick took all of his presents up to his room and came running back down the steps. He jumped onto the couch where Gray and I were sitting.
“When do we get our puppy?” Maverick questioned. Grayson chuckled at the eagerness of Maverick, “In a view hours, Mav. It’s only 9 in the morning, so the shelter doesn’t open for another hour. They have to get him ready to come home, anyways. We can go get him really soon.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Maverick cuddled between us as a Hallmark movie played on the flatscreen. A few minutes later, soft snores were coming from Maverick and his head laid in Gray’s lap while his legs stretched across me. Grayson giggled and grabbed my hand.
He stared deeply into my eyes and smiled widely at me. “I don’t think you realize how much you guys mean to me. Thank you so much for making me a dad. I love you, Y/N, so much more than you could ever understand, and I am so extremely lucky that you’re letting me be in your’s and Maverick’s lives. I love this kid more than I love myself, and he is one of the greatest people I have ever been blessed to love,” Grayson spoke out genuinely.
Tears welled up in my eyes, “I love you so much, Grayson. There’s nobody else I would rather love or have to be the father of my children. Maverick absolutely loves you, and the smile you bring to his face is one of the most amazing things in my life. Thank you so much, Grayson.”
Grayson kissed my hand and bent down to kiss Maverick’s forehead. He leaned his head against mine after pressing a gentle kiss to my head, and we soon fell asleep with smiles on all our faces.
