I was re-reading lots of the books in my collection last year, and one of them was Doll Bones (by Holly Black). I love me some spooky stories, and I also enjoy ones that somehow manage to capture complicated feelings about childhood... so this is a good one. The story mainly focuses on 3 children who enjoy playing an expansive imaginary game; they collect various toys and action figure to represent characters, and come up with plots for them. One toy they never touch, but is still part of their game, is “the Queen”- a old bone-china doll that stays locked in a glass cupboard. The kids enjoy playing together, but... Zach’s dad thinks he’s too old to “play pretend games with girls”, and throws away all of Zach’s figurines one day. Alice has an over-protective family, she feels suffocated at home and is starting to realize she has more than friendship feelings for Zach. Poppy lives in a chaotic house with a messy family, most of them don’t care about her, so the game and her friends is all she cares about... and when the other two feel like they can’t keep playing anymore, she decides they should play one last game, and this game should include the Queen. The children then discover that there was once a little girl named Eleanor, who’s father was a doll maker... and the children are given a REAL quest; give the doll a proper resting place
