Dolphins live in the open sea in groups of up to a hundred dolphins. Every dolphin has its own place in it. Dolphins give birth to their young alive and feed their young with milk. When a female has given birth to a young ('calf'), she takes care of her child for three to six years. After that time, a young male leaves the group to start a new group of his own.
Dolphins are very social and much attached to their family. For example, the females usually live together all their lives: they are grandmothers, aunts, mothers, and nieces. They know each other well. Even if they have not seen each other for twenty years, they still recognize each other.
Most dolphins migrate and travel great distances. They swim 40 km to 90 km per day. The killer whale, the largest dolphin, swims as much as 160 kilometers a day.
