🍕What’s your go-to pizza topping? 🍕 (close-ups and prelim sketches swipe left ⬅️⬅️) Well whatever your choice, be sure to AVOID THE NOID at all costs!!!! Anyone remember this zany claymation critter ruining pizzas in the 80s? I can’t/don’t eat much pizza these days ... but I can sure relate to how this munchkin feels in this moment. Making art, digital design, and gaming live recently has been a blast and also a great way to keep myself focused on tasks at hand. Be sure to come check out the process one day. I stream most weekdays in the evenings. A Very Merry Halloween; October 31st; Domino’s, Toronto
I’ve had a hard time deciding this, but Halloween has become my very favourite holiday (Wes, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry--I know you don’t think it’s a “holiday”!). Christmas is so special and sentimental, with its glowing lights beneath packets of sparkling snow, presents nestled beneath a big, green Christmas tree, hot cocoa or cider boiling on the oven. But Halloween epitomizes all the things spooky, creepy, weird, dark and mysterious (so basically, it epitomizes all things me!). The month of October is immersed in a special feeling that only Halloween can truly bring: that thrilling feeling I used to get when I’d venture out on Halloween night beneath a big, full moon, dressed in my costume, carrying my pumpkin pail, all to see the decorations and collect candy. I remember the streets in my old neighbourhood in Oakville, wind howling, sweeping up the leaves, creepy music quietly wailing from some of the front porches, while others were quiet, still, save for the flickering flames of their pumpkins’ candles.
This year, Adam and I really tried to get into the spirit of Halloween. Throughout October, we watched horror movies every chance we got, and although we never made it to a ghost walk or cemetery tour, Adam tried to make this Halloween special for me every chance he got. The weekend prior to the 31st, we hosted a Halloween party, and while turnout was small, our decorations were absolutely wild this year (we had lasers and a black light thanks to Adam’s sisters!) and I indulged in copious amounts of candy to get me through my hangover the next day.
But for the 31st, we had a big pizza party and move night planned. We chose to indulge in Domino’s – it’s one of our favourite delivery joints. Generous with their sauce, which is sweet, almost tangy, and slices that are piled high with cheese, baked perfectly, potted with little burned bubbles like lava, Domino’s is actually a terrific delivery pizza. I receive sceptical looks sometimes when I declare my love for their pies, but I think everyone needs to go order a Domino’s cheese pizza tonight and taste the sweet bliss. We ordered an extra large cheese pizza, wings for Adam, which came with their own ranch dip, and three extra dips for our pizza. Excessive, I know, but y’all know my love for pizza dip is everlasting. Our order arrived promptly, which I’ve come to expect from Domino’s. Here is where our hiccup in the night began: the delivery man let Adam know he had forgotten our three extra dips in the car... could Adam pay now and he’d run down after to get the dips? I found this odd, but Adam paid nonetheless, tipping him generously. I trotted the pizza over to the couch, preparing excitedly for our festive Halloween celebrations, and waited for the delivery man to come back with our dips. Five minutes passed... then ten. By this time, our food was getting cold and I knew the delivery man wasn’t coming back. It’s one thing to be told something is forgotten on a busy delivery night, which Halloween undoubtedly must be, but to be asked to pay for something that’s not in hand, or without the intent of ever actually delivering the product, is not cool. I felt duped and outsmarted! #firstworldproblems, to be sure—and it’s not about the money, we all know dip is cheap, it’s not even about the dip—it’s about the misleading and the utter lack of customer service. I never complain about service, mistakes in food orders, or even forgotten items. Had the driver explained it was a busy evening and that he had forgotten the dips, I would have waved it off. But it was the guarantee that he would be right back with the rest of our order that was not acceptable. So, I decided to call our store where I talked to a polite woman, calmly explaining the situation before being passed over to a manager who informed me they could not get in touch with the driver (WHAT?! RUNAWAY DIP OUTLAW?!) and would a credit for three dips the next time I ordered suffice? By this point, food cold, no solution in sight, I was frustrated. While it was a generous and appropriate offer, I asked him, why would I be asked to pay for something that was never going to be delivered? You wouldn’t walk into a grocery store or drug store and pay for a product that was not in hand, right? We had given the driver the benefit of the doubt and unfortunately, he had not fulfilled his end of the bargain. Finally, the manager said he could send over the dips but that it would take some time. At last, the driver came back with our dips, saying they had been at the store, and we could dig into our pizza.
I’ll be honest, all frustration dissolved when I bit into that first juicy slice, tangy ranch sauce melting into the savoury cheese slice... sweet, oozing sauce exploding in my mouth. “We can’t ever give them up!” I exclaimed to Adam. Domino’s was restored. Guys, like I said, go order their pizza, like now. It’s that good.
Things don't always work out smoothly, or happen the way you planned or hoped for them to. But that's okay. We don't have control over everything, we never will. We can set things in motion, and go into situations with the most positive attitude, but beyond that, things will happen as they may. Don't sweat the small stuff, like pizza dips... share moments with the people you love and remember the important things in life. What those important things are to you, only you can decide. It might be having a pizza party with your partner on Halloween, it might be going for that job opening, it might be having a family, it might be dedicating yourself to a healthy lifestyle and fitness regime, or it could be something very different. Remember to take it all in stride, and enjoy the small moments. Time passes so quickly, we need to relish all we can.
