It’s Time to Wake up to Darrell Scott’s “Sunday” Series

- “Oh, Lonesome Me” rewinds tape to 20th century

Attention anyone who’s been sleeping on Darrell Scott’s “It Must be Sunday” video series - it’s wake-up time.

Episode 82 captures Scott and a killer, subtle and sympathetic band on Oct. 7, 1999, performing Don Gibson’s “Oh, Lonesome Me” during a house concert in North Carolina.

Vintage, yes, but also virtuosic as Scott, on acoustic guitar and vocals, accordionist Steve Conn, John Cowan (electric bass) and percussionist Kenny Malone deliver the song in a genre-bending and -embracing manner as unexpected as it seems undoable.

Scott takes it to country with his yodeling and infuses it with blues via his guitar and vocal phrasing. Malone alternately swings and shuffles, giving Scott everything he needs, while Conn inserts the sound of polka within the confines of everything but. And Cowan pulls off the nifty trick of not overwhelming his acoustic counterparts with his electrified bottom end.

This is the kind of capture that reminds viewers how ridiculous it was that Scott was playing house concerts then and isn’t playing arenas today.

Sixty years ago today on February 5, 1963–in one of her final recording sessions–Patsy Cline recorded “Sweet Dreams”. The song was released posthumously as she was killed in an airplane crash one month later. _________________________ Sweet Dreams Songwriter: Don Gibson
