In the summer, the spirits of the forest are less active during the day and mostly come out at night. This is how the Totoro Tribe avoids the heat. Thus, Big Totoro is usually sleeping during a day in a hedge nest. Meanwhile, Mid and Mini Totoros only come out to collect acorns. At night, the trio come out to plant the seeds and magically help the trees grow. At this time of the year, many soot sprites are returning to the homes they were cleaned out of during the spring. However, some may still be drifting to find more permanent settlements.

In the autumn, the spirits of the forest are settling in for the coming winter. The Totoro Tribe is delighted to see the cascade of colorful maple leaves because, the tree spirits rejoice in the changing of the trees. Big Totoro is usually seen having supposedly turned dark brown or fall orange. Mid Totoro is often seen carrying an autumn leaf of some kind. Finally, Mini Totoro is often holding an orange fruit. At this time of the year, many soot sprites are settling into attics of countryside homes while humans are preparing for the next coldest season of the year.

Summer Nights

One night, Mei and Satsuki ask to sleep by the front door at some point in the movie. Their father agrees to leave the door open and sets up a mosquito net for them. The two kids eventually wake up to find Big Totoro using his magic to grow a large tree in their front yard. Although they might think this is a dream, Mei and Satsuki later experience another magical night when the Cat Bus appears to help them deliver vegetables to their mother at the hospital.

Tatsuo Kusakabe's Character & Personality

Tatsuo is a thirty-two-year-old Japanese man. He's the husband of Yasuko. Tatsuo is also the father of Satsuki and Mei. He works at a college as a professor of archaeology. Tatsuo is a kind, patient, and intelligent person. More than anything, he's a very good dad who does his best to keep his two daughters happy when their mother is in the hospital. Beyond this, Tatsuo believes in his children's imagination. Thus, he understands their belief of Totoro and the other spirits. Tatsuo enjoys riding his bike, taking baths, visiting his wife, and spending time with his kids.

Movie Description

This animated tale follows a schoolgirl and her younger sister as they settle into an old country house. There, with their father, the family waits for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature, Totoro.
