Hey love the blog. Quick questions, Do you think ren was truthful with rey about her parents? And what do you THINK will happen between the 2 in ep 9 given what weve seen in the past 2 eps?
Thanks for your questions! This is a bit long, there’s a lot to cover ^^;;
Yes, he was being truthful. He said from the start of their encounters that he wanted to be honest with her from the very beginning. He had no reason to lie to her. No desire to. If there is one thing about Kylo, it’s that he is honest to his own truth. She offered him a life with her away from the darkness and he declined because his life on the light side brought him so much pain and judgment.
And also when they touched she saw his future with her, and he saw her past that she had hidden away inside of herself. She was scared to face her past and he made her accept the hard truth about her parents, and in doing so, freed her of the denial that was shackling her down to a barren life on Jakku. Rey couldn’t face the pain of reality. She didn’t want to. Kylo wanted her to stop living a lie and to be with him. He was helping her come to her own truth the way he did.
What will happen? Well… it’s hard to say if Rey will get her wish to start a Jedi academy with him or not, but it’s a direction which makes the most sense to me. I think they both are discovering that darkness and the emotions related to it are not something that should be cast out, but something one must go through and build a tolerance for, rather than veering so completely to one side, much to the detriment of everyone else. There was too much vilifying of one side by the other. “They do this wrong. You must be only like this.” It gave no room for growth and no acceptance for others who are different.
It’s kind of like, a person is born and is a certain way. Some of it is nurture, but some is nature. And the dark/light philosophy is to completely be rid of something ingrained in one’s nature, if that person is born with disagreeable inclinations, just as Kylo was. He couldn’t fit in at home, but he wasn’t evil either. So while we may not get Emperor/Empress Ren & Rey (still be cool if we do), we may still get Jedi masters Ben & Rey who dedicate their lives to telling young gifted children that they are unique and awesome the way they are (basically what should have happened for Ben), to help them find and pursue their natural talents, rather than shunning them for not being dark or light enough. They will bring balance in the form of the order of Grey Jedi. Yoda lighting up the ancient Jedi texts was no coincidence. The force is so done with the pretentious pure light vs pure dark. It’s not realistic, and it’s not healthy.
And as far as reconciliation… I’m hoping that the force bond is still there (I suspect it is). As heartbreaking as their parting look was at each other, it served a purpose to say “This wasn’t actually Snoke magic, it is outlasting him, ergo their bond is strong or something which was there long before he amplified it.” This gives me hope. Kylo is (probably) going to get into trouble and Rey will need to go to help him from a Hux coup or something along those lines. I don’t think it’s possible for Rey to give up on him. One of her best traits is seeing the good in everything, no matter how broken it may be. Ben will help her too.
Someone wondered to me the other day, asking if Kylo could draw from Rey’s mechanical expertise, and yes it could happen. I really want to see it happen in 9 where he comes out of a pinch because of the skills he’s learned through her. She has been targeted with all kinds of Mary Sue comments by fans who just don’t understand what happened between them. So if we see this happen, maybe it will show them that some of her skills were thanks to their force bond and Kylo’s own talents, not her supposed marysueitis.
One final thing, these two characters are coming of age. Transitioning from their naive and demanding child selves into balanced young adults. I think during their separation, Rey will reflect a lot on what Kylo was doing for her when he forced her to face her truth. That he was really only trying to help her. I think in time she will appreciate that and forgive him for the harshness of his delivery because sometimes we are faced with hard truths for a greater purpose. Ben will live because his greater purpose in the story and his character finding his peace and happiness, is still yet to come.
