sunlight filtered through the classroom windows as you sat at your desk, pencil scratching against your college ruled paper in rhythmic strokes.
science class had always been your comfort place, a place where logic reigned and emotions took a backseat.
much like your father, do-yeong, you preferred the quiet certainty of facts over the swirl of feelings that seemed to define your evil stepmother, yeon-jin.
at sixteen, you carried yourself with a reserved personality that mirrored your dad.
calm, introspective, rarely raising your voice even when the world around you was full with teenage drama.
your younger sister, ye-sol, was different.
she had that spark for a little girl her age. she was loud, and had that unfiltered energy that echoed her biological mother's fiery temperament.
you?
you were the steady one, the observer, content to blend into the background.
your biological mother passed away years ago, and you only had yeonjin as your stepmother to terrorize you.
it had been a year since dong-eun entered your life as your science tutor.
she appeared one afternoon after school, recommended by some distant connection your regular teacher had.
from the first session, her presence felt like a balm.
she wasn't loud or demanding. instead, she guided you with patient explanations, her voice soft, unraveling the complexities of biology and physics like they were simple puzzles.
it did not take long before you started to look up to her immensely. not just as a teacher, but as something more.
an older sister, perhaps, or even a mother figure in the quiet moments when she listened to your rambling thoughts without judgment.
yeon-jin had never been that for you.
your stepmother was only superficial.
dong-eun, with her thoughtful eyes and scarred arms that she sometimes hid under long sleeves (even though she thinks you did not see them), felt real.
you loved her as a mentor, cherishing the way she made you feel seen.
you didn't know, of course, that dong-eun had orchestrated it all.
becoming your tutor was no accident.
it was a calculated step in her intricate plan for revenge against yeon-jin. however, ignorance kept your admiration pure. in her company, you found solace from the polished facade of your rich family life.
the first crack in that facade came subtly, through a lesson on genetics.
dong-eun was explaining hereditary traits, her chalk moving across the board in neat lines.
"colorblindness, for instance," she said, "is often linked to the x chromosome. it's more common in males, but can pass through females if the father has colorblindness."
you nodded, absorbing it, but something nagged at you.
your little sister ye-sol had been diagnosed with colorblindness recently... red-green deficiency, the doctor had said.
it puzzled you because neither you nor your father had it.
do-yeong was fine... his vision sharp as ever for a businessman of a multi billionaire company.
yeon-jin saw colors vividly too, always commenting on the hues of her designer clothes.
dongeun saw the gears turn in your head whenever you remembered jae-jun.
he wasn't exactly a friend of the family, more like one of yeon-jin's old acquaintances who lingered on the edges of your world.
you'd seen him at gatherings, his eyes lingering too long on people, and on you sometimes, in a way that made your skin crawl.
those weird eyes... predatory, almost.
you hated him for it, the unease he stirred without a word. and you'd overheard once, in hushed tones, that jae-jun was colorblind too.
the same type as ye-sol.
the coincidence felt too slim. a
lmost none.
that night, lying in bed, you pieced it together like a science experiment. if colorblindness came from the x chromosome, and ye-sol had it, but do-yeong didn't… the math didn't add up unless the father wasn't him.
your heart raced as implications dawned.
yeon-jin had cheated.
ye-sol wasn't your sister, biologically.
confronting your stepmother came the next day, after school.
she was in the living room, scrolling through her phone, her perfectly manicured nails tapping the screen.
"yeonjin," you said, voice steady despite the shakiness inside, "i need to talk to you."
she looked up, arching a brow.
"what is it, y/n? make it quick... i have a meeting at siesta soon."
you swallowed.
"about ye-sol. her colorblindness. dad doesn't have it. you don't. but jae-jun does."
yeonjin's face froze for a split second, then she laughed... a sharp, dismissive sound.
"what are you talking about? that's ridiculous."
"it's not. i learned about genetics. it's hereditary. if dad was her father, the chances are low. unless…"
yeon-jin's eyes narrowed, the warmth vanishing.
"mind your own business, y/n. you're too young to understand these things."
"did you cheat on my dad?" the words tumbled out, bolder than you felt.
yeonjin stood, towering over you with that intimidating grace.
"don't you dare accuse me. and keep your mouth shut about this. your father doesn't need to know every little secret." she paused, then softened artificially.
yeonjin walked over to the other side of the room, pulling out a wrapped box from her bag before walking it over to you.
"here, i got you that new phone you wanted and some jewelry. just… stay out of it."
the gifts felt like bribes, heavy in your hands.
you nodded numbly, retreating to your room, anxiety churning in your gut. the future of your family seemed fragile, like a glass teetering on the edge.
who could you turn to?
not dad.
he was always buried in work, distant in his own calm way.
yeon-jin had shut you down.
that left dong-eun.
the next tutoring session, you arrived early at the quiet cafe where you met. dong-eun was already there, sipping tea, her notebook open.
"you're early," she noted, a small twinkle showed in her eyes.
"i need to talk," you blurted, sliding into the seat.
"it's about my family. i think… i know my stepmom cheated on my dad. ye-sol isn't his. it's jae-jun's I think... because of the colorblindness."
dong-eun's expression didn't change much, but her eyes sharpened. she set down her cup carefully.
"how did you figure that out?"
"from our lessons. and i've seen jae-jun. he looks at me weird, like i'm something to… i don't know. i hate him." you shuddered, the words spilling.
"i confronted yeonjin and she told me to shut up and gave me stuff to keep quiet. i'm scared, dong-eun. what if dad finds out? what happens to us?"
she leaned forward, her voice gentle.
"it's okay to be scared. families have secrets, but they don't have to define you, since you did nothing wrong."
you noticed then, as her sleeve rode up slightly, the faint scars on her arms... pink lines you'd glimpsed before but never asked about.
"those scars," you whispered, "what happened?"
dong-eun hesitated, then rolled up her sleeve deliberately, revealing the marred skin.
the woman executed the next part of her revenge... making yeonjin lose the trust of her stepdaughter.
"your mother did this to me. back in high school. her and her friends bullied me relentlessly. curling irons, cigarettes… they burned me, humiliated me. i dropped out because of it."
your world tilted.
yeon-jin?
the woman who hosted elegant parties and smiled for cameras?
"my stepmom? no…"
"yes," dong-eun confirmed, her tone even.
anger surged through you, hot and unfamiliar.
"that's horrible. i… i hate her for that." you shivered, looking around before tears formed into your eyes.
dong-eun did not say anything, she looked at you.
she was waiting.
"I hate her for everything. if anyone’s my mother figure, it's you, dong-eun. not her. never her."
tears pricked your eyes.
"I- I just... I want dad to leave her. for good. I'll help you with anything. whatever you need."
dong-eun's gaze softened, a rare vulnerability flickering.
"you're brave, y/n. braver than i was at your age, but be careful. I am not asking for classical revenge or things from the books in your classes. this is a moral decay, almost. i'm willing to go far to make sure that your stepmother does not find peace, again."
from that moment, a bond deepened.
dong-eun became more than a tutor.
she was your confidante, guiding you through not just equations but the murky waters of truth. you met her near school sometimes without yeonjin ever knowing, away from prying eyes.
dongeun protected you from the darkest parts... but gave you enough information to make you feel involved.

in a family with 5 kids in the spotlight like the baek’s, at least one of those kids is going to end up a trainwreck. and that honor lies with dongeun.
first of all, he has no idea who his real dad is. and like, he’s got a dad, but it’s not the same. not for him anyway. he feels like he was robbed of getting to know, but none of his sisters seem to give a fuck, so that feels isolating to have to chill with on your own.
second of all, he’s a great singer. he loves singing. but no matter how good he is, it can never be his. he’s always gonna live in his mom’s shadow, not to mention naeun too. the one real cool talent he has, and in his family, it’s not even a talent.
not to mention the show. in theory, it’s fine-- it’s what made his family so much money, after all, and made his childhood stress free. but he thinks it’s stupid-- he’s the only member of his family who refuses to be on the show at all, and to be honest? that choice was made solely to piss the producers off. he hates them. they’re all leeches trying to capitalize off of his mom’s intelligence and business sense, and being around them makes him see red.
at his core, he’s a good kid who just wants to be happy and be loved. that’s covered in layers of pessimism and fist fights waiting to happen. and maybe someday, once he’s finally on his own and has had some therapy, maybe he’ll be happier. but for right now, he’s a mess-- and kind of proud of that.
