Juan dela Cruz, the forever fan of show business and the foolishness that comes along with it. Yes it is true that it is not only us Filipinos who have a taste for rumors circling famous and infamous celebrities but what makes this country's obsession for this stand out is the fact that we tend to pattern our daily life, from taking a "just woke up selfie" (good Lord!) or "sleeping selfie" (the STUPIDEST selfie of all) to taking a selfie-video of pretending to be a local star (NOTE: We really don't care about your trip to your pet's grooming station.) after our favorite local (MAINSTREAM) celebrities. If you want to have a SCRIPTED life better join the PINOY Big Brother. Oh wait, you cannot be shortlisted nor have the AWESOME chance to join if you do not have reliable connections with the network.
Going back to my main topic; this kind of obsession is an irony of every tiny thing that Filipinos live for every effing day. The marginalized Filipinos complain about how they can not have a decent and complete meal for a day yet when they watch (Yes, most have TVs and some even have cables. Oh, the irony of it all!) the wedding their cry for decent meals suddenly vanish. Their attention completely turned to this one-day non-historic event. The 7 Million Peso, 12-foot high Goldilocks-made wedding cake could already feed thousands of Filipinos.
And as a matter of fact, the money spent on the wedding reception that took place in SM MOA Arena could also have easily provided basic needs for the less fortunate Filipinos.
And please enough with the "Royal " wedding. They are not royals anyway.
Of course we, the "critiques" or "mga bitter, nega" do not really strip of the couple's rights of having an obnoxiously extravagant wedding because, well, it is their event anyway. We can even ignore the couple's real intentions, or their mother network's real intentions, of having that kind of wedding BUT I think what really bothers us is the FIlipinos embarrassing trait, as ChinoF of Get Real Philippines puts it, "Starstruck Ignoramuses." Being blinded by the glitz and glamour of show business is truly an infectious disease in our beloved country. Being a Starstruck Ignoramus is not only applicable to the #DongYan wedding, this wedding, once again, brought under the spotlight the sad state of Filipinos mentality toward life. A small-minded Filipino would rather ruin the solemnity of a very significant, life-changing event and brag about it for all the world to see rather than cherishing every second of that magical, heavenly event.
I hope I do not send across wrong signals. Yes, I am not a fan of the couple neither am I a huge follower of local and mainstream celebrities. I really do not care about the wedding. What really caught my dire to write about it is the nagging feeling that the Philippines are now evolving into a small-minded breed of people.
May Lord have mercy on us.
