”—my sister Doctor Donna Strange,” Stephen said, as he introduced Donna to the donor he’d been ordered to charm. “Who agreed to be my plus one for the evening. ”
“Ah, two doctors in the family,” the donor, a Justin Hammer, said. “I don’t believe I’ve heard your name.” He gave Donna a look that was both condescending and a little inappropriate.
“You wouldn’t have,” Donna said easily. “I’m a doctor of veterinary medicine,” she said.
“And the best veterinarian I know,” came a voice behind them. Stephen startled, turning automatically at the sound of Tony’s voice. He was dressed in an elegant suit, smile genuine and eyes warm. For a moment Stephen’s heart raced and he wondered who, here, was making deals, before he realized that this was not Tony Stark the merchant, but Tony Stark the man. “Hello Donna,” Tony’s voice was soft. “Stephen.”
Donna turned just as quickly as Stephen had and her eyes lit up. “Tony!” She stepped in, and Stephen watched her lean in to press a hello kiss to Tony’s cheek, completely ignoring the lack of proprietary. She had yelled at Tony only once, when she had learned that her life would eventually cost Stephen his. Then she’d cried in Tony’s arms and come out of it with some degree of peace that Stephen had never been able to give her.
Just learned three years later that the original Scott Derrickson version of Doctor Strange 2 that would have had Nightmare was indeed going to use that concept to showcase Stephen’s PTSD over his sister like I repeatedly said at the time that I hoped they would do until it became clear that Nightmare had been scrapped. I feel both extremely vindicated and like I’ve been robbed.
I won't lie, when I discovered the spoilers about Clea in Sorcerer Supreme #1? It broke me. Like, I had a literal meltdown in my home over learning what Steve Orlando did to my girl. Because by ignoring established continuity in books that've only come out recently? By saying Clea went back to the Dark Dimension to raise her baby sister? He basically said he doesn't care about her husband.
I know, intellectually, that's not what's happening. But honestly? That's what it feels like. Steve Orlando is basically implying the Clea's love for Stephen is not as important as artificially inflating Wanda's ego. And I think that's disgusting. I normally refrain from (or am even embarrassed for using) hyperbolic words like that in reviews. But here? I feel no shame in the least. Because it's an insult.
And it's why I refuse to stay silent.
Alongside my friends and family, Doctor Strange (both the character and Clea) have given me comfort throughout a difficult period in my life (that's still somewhat on-going). To see that ripped away so casually by people who don't care? Who have an interest in propping up another character? That's not okay. And I think most Scarlet Witch fans would agree with me on that.
That's why I'm glad Marvel is being raked over the coals for this in real-time. How do you misunderstand a fan-favorite supporting character like that!? Just...what the fuck!?
Doctor Strange Dad headcanons
He is very gentle and respectful with all females, esp those younger than him.
Is very caring and openly compassionate with children and females
The way he deals with males and females, there's a visible difference and favouritism towards the latter. With children, he tries not to let the difference show, but is not always successful. That image of Chris Hemsworth holding his son by the ankle and RDJ kissing the top of his daughters head whilst cuddling with her - that's him with girls and boys.
He always wanted daughters, partly because he helped a LOT with raising his little sister, l so he knows how to raise a girl (girl dad confirmed, lmao). And he knows how NOT to raise sons, by way of how he was raised. But with daughters, he knows how to be with them. He knows how to treat them right.
Was raised with the ‘tough love’ mentality. It was actually abuse. He wasn't able to leave, though, bc he had younger siblings depending on him, and if he did leave, then it would fall to his little siblings to be the next punching bag. He refused to let anyone touch his little siblings, ESPECIALLY his little sister.
Incredibly protective of younglings, especially females.
Will not stand for injustice being done to those around him
If he sees someone trying to intimidate someone else (esp someone who may or may not be in a position of inferiority), he will step in.
Someone tries intimidating or picking on someone else they know will not or can not fight back, and Stephen will fight in their corner. Stephen will intimidate them right back.
If he can help, he will. It doesn't matter if you are his worst enemy or his best friend or his long-term arch-nemesis - if you need help and he can, then he will, whilst expecting nothing back.
Idk about his home life, according to the films or comics, but from what I know, he comes from an abusive environment (like Tony Stark)
His sister falling through the ice is something that he blames himself for every day (perhaps his parents did, too)
His father is heavily implied to have been an abusive dickwad like Howard Stark. Idk what profession he was, but I like to think that his father may have been a doctor too. And used that knowledge to hurt his wife and children whenever he felt like it.
Stephen was the oldest of 3: Stephen, Victor, and Donna Strange. Whenever their father would get abusive, Stephen would step in and take the punishment for his siblings and sometimes even for his mother, when he was able to. He never let that fucker touch Donna.
Stephen's hands after the accident remind him of the other scars he has on his body from his father.
Stephen wanted to originally become a doctor so he could use his knowledge for good, to help people, not hurt them, to become the complete opposite of his father. He also wanted to associate the title Doctor Strange with something positive and didn’t want his father to be the only Doctor Strange everyone remembered.
His sister's death was the deciding factor in becoming a doctor (I'm pretty sure this is canon).
His father thought Stephen killed Donna on purpose so she'd be away (safe) from their father.
Their mother thought Stephen had finally caved to his father's abuse and was en-route to becoming exactly like him. She screamed at him for hours on end, the same day accusing him of murdering her little girl (caught in her own grief, she seemed to have forgotten that Stephen also had a relationship with Donna) and becoming like his father all in the same breath.
It's the most traumatic day he's ever had.
She had a mental/emotional breakdown that day and had to be sedated in the hospital. Stephen stayed with her that day and, in doing so, unknowingly left his little brother to take his father's abuse that day.
Victor started resenting Stephen bc he believed his father, believing that Stephen let Donna die to save her from their father and was smart enough to figure out that this news would send their mother to hospital, leaving there an opening for their father to hurt Victor. He felt abandoned by his big brother.
That's the day their family broke apart.
He was 16, Victor was 14, and Donna had been 10.
Donna was the youngest. She was the Ray of Sunshine in everyone's lives (even the father, on some occassions). Her untimely death was remembered by every member of the Strange Family and mourned in their own way.
They were never quite the same after that.
Stephen moved away for college and university, fully focusing on his studies. His need for perfectionism was only fuelled by the loss of his sister, who was the only person to say that it didn't need to be perfect, it just needed to be done.
Years later, he heard another younger (superpowered) female saying those exact words, (with a name to do with sunshine) and fears she will end up like his baby sister did, in his care.
He swears to never let this kid get hurt on his watch, and if she does get hurt, he'll sure as hell avenge it.
When his father first used the belt on him, he swore to be nothing like that guy. He thinks he's done a pretty good job so far.
You can clearly see Stephen is sincere offering his condolences even though he and Nick were never close, but it's only rewatching the movie a second time that it hits you...
He's thinking about Donna.
(Just a headcanon, searched through Donna and MCU Stephen and while this isn't true at all I thought it was fun. Enjoy!)
Donna had her own white streaks in her hair as well, it was the simplest detail that others used to connect that she and Stephen were siblings.
They made fun of each other and said the other was aging fast or that they stressed too much, laughing as they did so.
After Donna's death and throughout Stephen's journey of becoming a neurosurgeon, he grew bothered and even ashamed of his white streaks from time to time,
But then he remembers Donna's own white streaks, how she styled them in ways to show them off, how confident and happy she was to have them and embraced such an unusual aspect of their relations.
Even when he stills mourns his dearest sister, and continues to push through all the stress and struggles into becoming the doctor he wanted, needed to be, he thinks of his white streaks as a memorable reminder of his sister and continues on.
Y’all ever think about the fact that Stephen probably had to do a whole unit over drowning and water rescue while in med school.
