We ran down to the sea, crossed low houses corroded by salt and wind and the beach appeared. It was another world compared to my mountains. In the mountains you discover things little by little, step by step and you had to stop to observe, to listen, to search. The beach was different: it was huge! You were only a small child in that immensity that was only the prelude to that other immensity that was the sea, but while the beach was still and only drawn by the wind, the sea was always in motion and while we were playing it always spoke like a old man who said what to do or what not to do following our games. We played football, running with difficulty in the sand and then, exhausted, throwing ourselves into the waves to lull us close to the sea in a liquid embrace that supported us and enveloped us like my grandmother did when I cried and cuddled her to make me forget that my mother was not with me. Then came evening. Quickly the heat of the sand faded away until it disappeared stolen by the wind, the sea calmed down moving slowly, the blue of the sky faded, shades of orange and violet rose from the horizon, soon becoming dark. Everything went out, as if turning off a carousel and the joy it gave, it was time to go home. We did not think of tomorrow or yesterday, but only of running on the beach, happy because we did not know the sense of time and ignored the bad things that the darkness that rose from the distant horizon could have brought. Maybe that’s why every time I’m on a beach, I don’t want to leave it, because in fronto that immense freedom I see, I don’t feel the time passing and I’m still a child again.
