Don’t you just love when stuff just grows in your garden? You can find Kiwano, bok choy, radishes, sweet potatoes, herbs, amaranth, and pigeon peas in our garden growing on their own amongst the weeds. This is actually my best harvest of Kiwanis yet and they were planted by a crab! At least a dozen more left on the vine even bigger then these! Growing a food forest is as easy as scattering some seeds and letting nature take its course. Time to harvest more seeds! We’ve been growing Kiwano’s for 4 years now and I’ve finally figured out the secret to an abundant harvest. Can you guess what it is? First year, I made a bamboo trellis at a low angle slant and planted 6 plants at 12 inches apart. Got hit by a hurricane and harvested a total of only 8 Kiwano’s. Second year, I shared seeds with my neighbors and they almost had a harvest but loose donkeys, goats and cows ate everyone’s crops. Third year, we tried a vertical trellis out of construction mesh. Planted a total of 18 plants. 9 on each side at 12 inches apart. They were too exposed to the wind and we lost most of the plants except for maybe 4. A crab came out of nowhere and ate our entire batch. For the 4th year, whatever seeds that the crab didn’t eat sprouted on their own and I simply left them alone. The weeds help protect it from the wind and also gave it plenty of climbing space. So in conclusion, the best thing I could have ever done was simply drop the seeds and walk away. Eventually nature finds its own balance.
