It is my dream in life to write an angsty amnesia AU so here's a canon-verse canon-timeline Zukka Amnesia AU based on that one tumblr post going around like "when you wake up with amnesia and feel like you should trust some person even though you can't remember anything about them and actually it turns out you were wrong and you should not have trusted that person".
During the siege of the North Pole Zuko gets knocked unconscious, but when he wakes up he can't remember anything like absolutely no memories at all but he still knows how to talk and walk and act like a human and shit because it's my AU and I make the rules.
Anyway instead of waking up during the battle like in canon, he sleeps through it and somehow ends up leaving on Appa with the Gaang. The Gaang is very distrustful but soon learn that Zuko legitimately doesn't have any idea who he is or who Aang is or anything. They debate leaving him in a town but ultimately take him with them.
Sokka explains the war to Zuko and Zuko, who doesn't remember the years of Fire Nation propaganda he's been taught, is like "oh actually that's super fucked up why would anyone do that". Sokka kind of just runs with the idea that Zuko is a rebel who defected to help them and Zuko, who doesn't know any better and also trusts this weird, smart super handsome water tribesman, also goes along with it. He even teaches Aang firebending which he somehow remembers how to do. As he does, there are some memories fighting at the depths of his mind but he can't get them to make sense.
And along the way, Sokka and Zuko fall in love but they don't get together - because Sokka knows that's not the real Zuko and doesn't want to take advantage of him or be with someone who he knows is old Zuko underneath it all.
It falls apart in Ba Sing Se - when Zuko meets both Iroh and Azula and his memories come back to him. Cue angst. Zuko feels betrayed that Sokka lied to him about who he was ("why didn't you tell me we were training Aang to take down my father?" "you're father's a piece of shit, Zuko" "I still deserved to know") but he also feels conflicted because he likes Sokka and the Gaang, and he thinks they're doing the right thing. If they were telling the truth, that is. Zuko has no idea who to trust.
And Zuko, confused and hurt and wanting to go home, betrays them in Ba Sing Se. He always betrays them in Ba Sing Se. But really... Sokka betrayed him first
