The longer she looked at the pages, the more she squinted for focus. The books she grew up reading and the books the humans used looked the same, but the words printed inside were a new language, literally. Pia had learned how to speak it (some things still unknown to her, like figures of speech) but reading she was still getting the hang of. Other than the pronunciation, she had to learn about the different symbols - letters - and how the created different sounds. The whole silent letters rule didn’t help.
“Good thing there are pictures.”
She told herself cheerily, despite looking frustrated. There was still a chance for her to understand the story being told that way.
