I don't understand how YOU don't understand that I don't want to talk to you
Goodbye's Are Never Easy(response)
It would've been a lie to admit that she wasn't surprised, although words for how she felt never seemed too simple to suggest at any given time, but there was this warmth that even she didn't expect from him... maybe she just didn't know him as much as she originally thought. However, with those words stretched out beyond her, Karina couldn't help the grin sure to fall beneath the very nature of his hug (or rather his life-threatening grip) and she didn't want him to let go.
"Brian..." she grunted after some time, "If you keep holding me like that I just might..."
"Might what?" he asked as he released her, now taking a moment to look her over and noting the fact that she looked 100% unscathed, even though she was supposed to have been dead for what, a month now? "You'll run away? Play dead? Walk out and never even say a word to me? Oh wait, you already did that." His voice was cold now, the moment of pure joy at seeing her alive now replaced with a cold fury at how she had walked out, at the phone call that he'd gotten in the early morning hours from his partner, at the days he'd spent practically as a zombie that he'd never tell her about.
"Why'd you leave Karina? Why like that?"
Good Bye's are Never Easy
He hated her. She knew it. There was no need to second guess, to call and be certain to her the scorn and sorrow and rage in a voice so dear to her heart that even the sound of his voicemail called to something deep within her own sorrow. She missed him beyond anything else, no matter what lies she fought to tell herself, hope and pride believed they were real, wished with every inch of decency that they were truths. But it was only a lie.
She would tell herself that she left because she needed closure, because she needed to find out who and what she was, that she was tired of living a lie. But the truth was, she was afraid and somehow Gamble knew that- he was near to the only one who knew that. Maybe they were cowards together and that made pretending so much easier. But was it enough? Was never saying words that each needed to hear, enough? Was flirting beyond the point of determination, enough? Was he enough?
No- she knew the answer to the last one; he was more than enough.
And that was why she had to leave him specifically. He was so much more to her that she was afraid she wasn't for him, she was changing in ways that she couldn't understand, didn't understand, shit- doesn't understand even now. But it wasn't fair for her to drag him down with her needs and wants. Perhaps as friends, if she kept that thought that they were just friends she might've stayed, but it would've torn her heart to see him arm in arm with a beautiful brunette or a striking blonde. Karina never wanted to see him with anyone else but her, the feeling was so strong that it scared her and scares her now.
If she would've said bye to him then.... If she went to him after that faithful phone call.... the nightmares are endless. But here she is now, isn't that enough? Outside of his home, in the cold morning rain, hesitant to knock on the door, and when she does some sense of moral obligation pushes her away from the steps and back into the rain until she hears the door open.
"Brian..." she half croaks and half laughs, turning back on her heels to meet him face to face. "I love you."
"Karina?" he breathed, barely a whisper, reaching out to grab her by the arms and holding her in front of him. "I thought you were dead! What the hell are you doing?" his voice rising as he shook her. Then suddenly pulled her in against him, crushing her to his chest. She was back, she was here, she wasn't dead.

Hey bby.
My Detective
The phone call came in at 3am. Brian had just finally gotten to sleep when he heard his phone playing "Crosstown Traffic", Street's ringtone. He grabbed his phone and let loose with a string of expletives followed by "Goddammit Jimbo, I just fucking got to fucking sleep. I don't care who's being held hostage, tell them to fuck off." He was about to hang up when Jim said, "Bri, it's Karina." The moment he heard it he knew. It didn't matter how or when. "Ok. Thanks." was all he could say as he hung up the phone. She was never coming back.
