Doomguy Backstory Headcanons:

-He's from the Midwest somewhere, small town. (All the angriest men come from the Texas area)

-Farm boy, loves spring on account of baby animal season

-Grew up with a border Collie and a fat orange tom cat named "Sweetie."

-Mean father, emotionally absent working mother. One older sister that pretty much raised him before she turned 18 and escaped as soon as she could. She was likely much older than him, 7+ years at least.

-Close with his grandfather, raised almost exclusively on war stories. Got really quiet when Grampa Blaz died, kept to himself when no one stepped up to help him process the grief.

-Does not like the name Flynn. Prefers "Fly" around friends. Grandpa called him "Flynnie", "Fin", "Franklin", "Filbert", "Buster", and "Flyn-nun" (to emphasize the second N). It pissed him off until Blaz passed away.

-Total gearhead, bought a motorcycle when he was 16 and practically lived in the shop behind the barn after that

-Raised Catholic, never really believed in it much. Maintains a quiet hope type of faith to keep himself from going completely insane.

-Grew up on country music, but had his life changed when he picked up a Metallica CD from the bargain bin

-Rarely seen without Grandpa's old leather jacket

-Big feelings about the Virgin Mary

-Got the prom queen, Elaine Bradford, pregnant in high school, married her ("cause Grandad raised him right"), then joined the Marines to take care of them both. Tried to be there for them, but inevitably was absent. Did love them, in his way, but knew it wasn't quite enough.

-Was ordered to Mars just before Easter, allowed some leave to spend with his family before he shipped out.

-His son, Caleb William Taggart, found an abandoned Easter rabbit in a box by an irrigation ditch. Always had a soft spot for animals, so he bought everything to take care of it without asking Elaine.

-Took care of the bunny with Caleb, it was their only "together" project.

-Didn't tell his family that he was going to Mars. Didn't want to worry them, you know? Besides, he would be back in a few years and he could technically retire.

-Didn't know what he had until he lost it.

-AuDHD, restless. Cranky if he's bored and will invent chores (later hobbies) if he has nothing else to do. Misses calving and hay season with his dad and Grandpa Blaz.

-Loves baseball, but built like the football player his father always wanted.

-Does not care for football

-Has dissociative episodes where he can't quite tell where he is. It seems like a split personality out of contrast, but it's more of an intense confusion/psychosis. Will ask after Elaine Taggart and talk about things from his past as if he were still there, like Caleb's college savings or gas prices.

-Will do this in the same sentence as talking about demons and dragons. Defaults to Marine-speak and old habits during these episodes (i.e. kind of a dick)

-Loved traveling with the Corps, seeing the world

-Loved the world

-Loved everything on the world more than he was ever really allowed to show

-Wonders if he was ever really taught somethin' as good and kind as love

-But why else would he choose to hurt this bad for people that won't hurt for him?

-Maybe love ain't simple

-Maybe love ain't soft

-Maybe it ain't something you need to be taught in the first place

-Likes comic books and a beer once and a while
