I really liked Travis Marshall, he had a ton of potential. But the writers kind of dropped the ball post-hallucination reveal. Like as both an antagonist and a parallel to Dexter he was top notch. The central question of S6 is whether or not monsters (like Dexter) can be redeemed. Dexter doesn't think that killers can be redeemed, partly bc it calls into question his whole "code", partly bc he doesnt believe that he himself could earn redemption. And then he meets Brother Sam, a "reformed" killer. And he sees goodness in him. Real, genuine light. It shakes up his entire worldview.
So Dexter starts to believe in redemption, just a little bit. He has to, for his own sake, for Sam's sake, for his son's sake (Jonah exemplifies this). Then comes Travis Marshall who, like him, is motivated by a dark passenger, a father figure he obeys like God. Like him, Travis has a sister who he loves dearly, the only one who sees the light in him.
The professor is a very obvious parallel to Harry, Dexter's own dark passenger, and the fact that Dexter wants to slay him has some very interesting implications. Dexter's overall character arc has been about doubting his father (who he literally once described as "his own personal god"!!), it's been heading this way since the very 1st season.
But then he learns that the professor is nothing more than a convenient excuse. That Travis has always been a monster, will always be a monster, and that he and the dark passenger are one and the same. To slay one is to slay the other.
i think theres a lot of potential for toxic yaoi with the s6 killers on dexter. nothing on ao3 though
