Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 - )
“Uhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote “Upenda” - which means “peace” in Swahili, I understand — not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was “Uhura” her first name or her last name? Gene said, “Well, Nichelle and I never decided.” We always leaned towards it being her last name because it’s taken from the Swahili “uhuru” which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as “Freeman.” So he said, “You can make it her last name.” The writer said, “What about her first name? I’ve come up with one in Swahili. It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I like that.” — NICHELLE NICHOLS
Analysis so bad you don't even know what it's talking about anymore.
What??
Sarcasm.
This is hopeless.
IT WAS FUCKING
HORRIBLE
“I hate school I’m sorry Malala”- Funny yet poignant. Acknowledges both the difficulty of the task and the fact that doing that task is a privilege. Gives credit to the people who fought for that privilege with a tongue in cheek acknowledgement of the irony of the initial statement
“I’m just a girl I should be home baking bread not doing calculus” - at best historically uninformed at worst leaps decades back in time. Refusal to acknowledge the charged history of education and slights the centuries of women’s labor it took to reach this point
Look I don't think Supergirl (2026) is secretly a perfect masterpiece or anything (I personally thought it was like. a 6/10 fun time) but I do think it's wild that Tumblr isn't going crazy for it because this Kara is one coattailed suit away from being a Tumblr sexyman. she is the flawed messy female character people have supposedly been clamouring for. she's the popular archetype of a gruff self-destructive alcoholic middle-aged man begrudgingly having to look after a kid and growing fond of them but genderswapped and also 23. she's allowed to be visibly messy and kind of gross and her hair is constantly all over the place and she literally cries, screams, throws up, and pisses onscreen. she's caustic and mean and puts up an act of carelessness but has a heart of gold. she's heavily traumatised and coping with it terribly. if anything happens to her dog she will kill everyone in this room and then herself. she spends most of the movie in a trench coat and baggy band T-shirt. she gets into bar brawls and breaks a guy's hand. she is Going Through It 24/7 and looks the part. she stabs a guy in the throat. how is everyone else not obsessed with her.
Does anyone know what to do
why can rockstar games institutionalise you for life like nikita kruschev for being autistic
He didn't steal 10 million dollars. They made that number up as a loss, they never fucking had it. Rockstar has spent more than a billion fucking dollars on GTA VI and will likely make billions more when it gets released.
Uber is a fucking shell game of a company designed to leech investor capital and output bootleg cabs.
Nvidia posted a profit in 2023 of $4.37 billion. This is like someone stealing less than a penny from me.
And they lock this kid in a prison hospital for LIFE?
Capitalism is disgusting.
Nobody should buy GTA til they free Arion Kurtaj
What with GTA VI going up for pre-order i'd just like to remind everyone that rockstar conspired with the UK government to lock an 18-year-old away for life for hacking them.
I love Rocktiz, but I can't draw him with human Grace because I'm just too attached to the interspecie bond between Grace and Rocky. It's the soul of the movie and its so beautiful.
The human Rocky AU and eridian Grace AU down there, since i really liked the linearts its a shame they're so hidden

The Trump administration is spending more than $100 million to fight the "emergency" of "white genocide" in South Africa.
Every single one of the 599 refugees the US admitted last month was a white South African, according to data the State Department’s Bureau of Population released Friday.
In fact, so was every other refugee admitted this year. Since October 1, 2025, the US has accepted 6,668 refugees. Of those, 6,665 were white South Africans. Three—admitted last November—were from Afghanistan. No other refugees were admitted.
And this is only half the story. They are also revoking the legal status of existing immigrants granted protected status due to fleeing dangerous conditions in their home countries… and let’s look at which countries they are:
Since Inauguration Day, more than 1.5 million immigrants have either lost or will lose their temporary legal status, including their work au
I like Ax as a character concept but tbh his arc always felt kind of lackluster. He's arguably one of the most interesting characters who exists at the crux of sooo many plotlines (andalites, elfangor, visser 3, etc) yet he spends every book learning the EXACT. SAME. LESSON. And it's always "should I side with humans (who fight for freedom*) or the Andalites (who are 'my people')?" But like. He never LEARNS anything. We never deepdive into Andalite society and why a culture so militaristic and misogynistic is also seen as a paragon of good and democracy.
And I know part of that is genre restriction, but also... Ax is openly misogynistic. Like, INCREDIBLY so. And the fact that no one ever points it out, that Rachel never says anything?? Is so crazy to me. The book with Aldrea was so... ugh. You cannot convince me that Ax would have been as awful to her if she weren't female. Also, we never got to see Aldrea grappling with the fact that even after thirty years of constant war Andalites STILL haven't allowed females into the military (like, how is the civilian culture faring on the homeworld? Is there a feminist revolution similar to '40s USA?).
EVERY single time Ax faces even the possibility of a modicum of a difficult moral question, he just "waa-waa im an alien"s his way out of it. AND THEY LET HIM! Of all characters, Marco is the only one that ever calls him out on it 💀 and its not necessarily that Ax doesn't think about these moral quandries (the book with the chimpanzees comes to mind, as well as his decisions in some of the later books), he just doesn't, like. Say Anything unless its his book. Otherwise he may as well be a cardboard cutout. And I think thats ultimately why I struggle to like his character, he has basically no personality besides being cute and quirky but actually the quirkiness is just rampant unchecked bigotry
Ax is more-or-less our only window into the Andalite (and greater spacefaring) universe other than the Andalite chronicles, and sure, he's equivalently 13 & appropriately brainwashed but he's still a chance for us to learn so much. For example, why would an Andalite ever work with a Yeerk (sure, greed, but Yeerks as an empire aren't very wealthy or technologically advanced compared to Andalites and honestly, by all accounts it seems the Andalites will win the war in the long-run). I thought the Andalite traitors were going to be a way bigger deal in the endgame but they're really only mentioned in 1 or 2 books.
earlier this week Twitter user ppuccin0 tweeted about a fashion article that advised against tops with large floral patterns, saying the wearer was in danger of looking like a "ロマンティックおばさん," or a "romantic auntie." the tweet went viral with many agreeing that a "romantic auntie" sounded like a very nice thing to aspire to be, and some even posted illustrations or photos tagged with the trend

Found a great (free) documentary on the Freedom House Ambulance Service here- https://www.wqed.org/freedomhouse/ (has captions too)!
I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve heard about this. like for years I’ve been thinking “imagine if the police were in charge of ambulances and firefighting, all the horrible problems that would cause, wouldn’t it be better if they were a separate thing, etc” as a way to better understand/explain the fundamental problems with the existence of police. that framing was part of what made me start to understand why my friends were saying “ACAB” and “abolish the police”. I had no idea it was literally once historically like that and not just a hypothetical tbh
Interview with one of the original members of Freedom House Ambulance
This is cool as shit, and a part of my own career’s history that I didn’t even know about.
