“There is an universal tendency among mankind to conceive all beings like themselves, and to transfer to every object, those qualities, with which they are familiarly acquainted, and of which they are intimately conscious. We find human faces in the moon, armies in the clouds; and by a natural propensity, if not corrected by experience and reflection, ascribe malice or good- will to every thing,…

Dopamine And Its Role in Happiness
Tina Gibbons
Dopamine… The word dopamine has been cropping up all over the place for me over the last few years. When I first starting researching mental health in order to improve my own emotional wellbeing, the symptoms associated with irregular dopamine levels seemed to resonate with some of the symptoms I was experiencing. I have been fascinated and intrigued by dopamine and the role it plays in our emotional wellbeing ever since.
So – what is dopamine?
In the simplest of terms, dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that when released, makes you feel good. Eating triggers the release of dopamine, as does sexual activity and many other natural and rewarding activities, such as being in a loving relationship. However many habits and addictions that are not so healthy, also trigger the release of dopamine. Nicotine, cocaine and caffeine all influence dopamine levels and consequently have an impact on our mood.
Too much dopamine can lead to negative effects such as anxiety, restlessness, aggressiveness and mania, whilst not enough dopamine can potentially be responsible for lethargy, lack of motivation and depression.
The subject of dopamine and the role it plays in our emotional wellbeing and mental health is complex, so please don’t interpret this article as a method to self diagnose and treat accordingly. I merely want to draw your attention to dopamine and start to give you some kind of insight into the ways various activities and habits can contribute to our mood from a scientific perspective.
I’m always on the lookout for natural ways to increase and decrease dopamine levels in the brain, and will cover more of them in future articles. There are certain foods that can have different impacts on dopamine levels and some activities have been proven to increase dopamine levels.
