Kyrgyzstan Ready for Asian Cup Debut

The 2019 Asian Cup is set to begin in January and twenty-four teams will be participating for the first time ever, including two debutants.

One of the newcomers to Asia’s biggest football tournament is Kyrgyzstan. The former Soviet republic has hardly had any success since becoming an independent nation.

But when taking a closer look at recent qualifying tournaments, there actually has been improvement for Kyrgyzstan under Russian manager Aleksandr Krestinin.

During qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Kyrgyz squad finished third in a group that consisted of Australia, Jordan, Tajikistan, and Bangladesh.

But during the qualification campaign, it was impressive to see Kyrgyzstan defeat Jordan 1-0 in Bishkek and hold Jordan to a scoreless draw in Amman.

Kyrgyzstan has been placed in Group C with South Korea, China, and the Philippines. The first test for the Kyrgyz squad will take place on 7 January against China in Al Ain.

Online bookmaker 10Bet has the latest odds for the 2019 Asian Cup and currently Kyrgyzstan has 8/1 odds to defeat China.

Kyrgyzstan is obviously a heavy underdog going into the clash with China. Yet when examining the Chinese roster, I will be quick to say that I am not super impressed by the Chinese Super League.

But when looking at the roster of Kyrgyzstan, it really makes sense to say that getting a positive result against China can be considered as an impossible mission.

My reasoning is that there are Kyrgyz players on the national team that play in the fourth level of football in Germany and there are also two players that play in the top flight of football in Bangladesh.

Yes, Bangladesh.

A majority of Kyrgyz players currently play for Dordoi Bishkek, the top football club in Kyrgyzstan.

The two players that stand out the most for Kyrgyzstan are Edgar Bernhardt of Polish club GKS Tychy and Valery Kichin of Russian Premier League club Yenisey Krasnoyarsk.

It is a long shot for Kyrgyzstan to get a positive result against China, but I have a habit of pulling for the underdogs and any mistake by the Chinese national team might be able to create some suspense.

Prediction: China 3-1 Kyrgyzstan
