Dorm parenting in a nutshell...
Trying to get the kids to like me...
When I bring my kids snacks...
When your kids miss curfew...
Watching my Language Around Students...
Playing Catch Up...
Ok so lets think... what have ya’ll missed since I last posted. We had the Christmas Pageant, which is serious business at this school.
The kids have a reduced classload for the whole two weeks between Thanksgiving break and Christmas break, so they can rehearse their butts off. All of our boys were in it, because every single kid in the school is in it... I was proud of each and every one of them like they were my own kids, especially the ones who seemed to be having fun at it, but also most especially of one of our students who is infinitely harder on himself than he should be was tapped to play the violin for the show, who was recognized personally by the headmaster for his contribution. So... that was awesome. I think that may have bolstered his self image some.
We also had one boy with a singing solo, one that was put in a small important dance troupe, one that got to carry the front end of the palanquin containing a very very important item in the opening procession, (the exact name of which if googled would reveal what school I’m at) and two shepherds. The rest of them were in small chorus roles, but one was leaving early and wouldn’t be there for the last performance, and another is my emo kid, and I’m pretty sure he was satisfied not to be asked to really DO anything, and other things like that.
I’m a sucker for folks who are getting the short end of the stick. I look at them and see me as a kid. I must admit my favorite kids are my neurotic violinist and my emo. They’re roomates, and they’re just such good kids inside, even if other adults here have trouble seeing it. Very Breakfast Club. I’m showing my age.
A troubled student who I was getting close to before the break did not return from Christmas break, and won’t be coming back. I hope they have been sent somewhere where they can receive some help. They were in a lot of pain. Even so, I’m really gonna miss that kid. Under all the troubles they were having with some of the staff and teachers, they were a good kid dealing with a lot of hard stuff.
There’s just... no GIF for that. Sorry.
So we had a good Christmas break. All the kids got bused off to the airport and the train station the morning after the last performance of the pageant and there was not a peep out of a one of em till they came back. We’re on a new term, and things are looking up. I’m finally done with the painting in our little house attached to the dorm, the video game thief that was stealing in the dorms (I think you missed that too) has been identified and severely dealt with, and I can mostly chill now.
I spent Sunday afternoon watching the Hockey team run laps on the lawn because SOMEONE mooned a truck driver from the team bus and no one will say which one of them. Good on those who didn’t do it. Shame on the one who’s making the rest of his teammates go through this when he could spare them by fessing up. Three of mine are on the Hockey Team... I really hope it wasn’t one of them... but TBH they’re super pranky so I wouldn’t put it past a one of them. Especially the Bobs. Good boys, but hella mischievous. It’s like living with the Weasly Twins.
Have I mentioned that I love our kids? They’re awesome.
What Should We Call... Dorm Parents?
So... I’m a huge fan of the little What Should We Call type memes, so I’ve got a bunch of them in my drafts and queues, and what I’m realizing is that so far I have to pick and choose out of memes that were supposed to be for teachers... and memes that are supposed to be for parents of small children... because parents of teenagers... are not in the memeing demographic. So... yeah. There’s that... I’m going to try and make a few of my own and see how that works out. OTOH, If anyone KNOWS of any teen parenting or Dorm Parent Meme sites, please do let me know.
Damn Student Wifi
Bought Slime Rancher last night... couldn’t play. Apparently Steam game downloads are completely blocked. You can PLAY them but you can’t download them. Had to cart my laptop with me to work today to download the damn thing.
