Carpet Eel Blenny, Coral Bay WA

Check out this weirdo! It threw me for a massive loop when we found it, because I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. It's eel-like obviously, but with that heavy underbite it didn't match any true eels. I wound up searching various fish families with similar faces and "eel" in the search, and eel blenny finally got me to my answer.

Now despite the name they also aren't true blennies (though they are related, as they're a blenniform). They are, instead... dottybacks. A very classic, brightly coloured tropical reef fish that look nothing like this.

Another name for this species is Green Wolf Eel, another misnomer because wolf eels are also a real thing these guys are fully unrelated to. Kind of a mess of a fish to be honest, but they're awesome.

Re-did my saltwater aquariums aquascape and am feeling really pleased with it! It definitely has a lot of growing to do but the fish seem to like the new layout, and I think I will enjoy it being much easier to clean. Only coral that is upset is my Xenia, and it'll be back in full force before I even miss it lol.

Oh, and don't worry about the dottybacks fins...the dumb dumb loves shoving himself through small holes hunting worms and regularly rips them. I just make sure to keep things extra clean for his healing.

A Blackstripe Dottyback (Pseudochromis perspicillatus). Pseudochromis is a genus of fish in the family Pseudochromidae found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
