Knee-jerk reactions to rumors, etc.
As a fan, I am aware that I have put myself in the consumer position, deliberately. I feast on all the information that is made available, often seeking it out as if I was a ravenous carnivore. Then I relish it when I can share a little treasure that I have found, thus becoming an active part of what feels a bit like a well-oiled machine.
My motives are largely my own, not wholly unselfish, but still containing a minor purpose - at least in the big-picture of things. But I do have this thought that somehow, in my own little way, I am being a supportive fan. I believe that am one of many who do this as well, who quite possibly feel the same way. At least, that is what I hope.
However, often, as I wade through the internet abyssal - that soup of facts, misinformation, modified imagery and, occasionally, the genuine product served on a platter - a milled-to-oblivion rumor pulp emerges and that knee-jerk reaction morphs into a gut wrenching sickness.
But sometimes, it's a direct and sharper blow to the gut.
None of these feelings are because it hurts me specifically, but because it may hurt another.
There are two catalyst examples and types to these feelings:
Mild, as when I see that pictures of someone's infant child have been plastered on the internet without their knowledge.
Horrifyingly sharp, as when I see the image of a very young girl who appears unconscious and is being raped.
The latter often sends me into a denial state, where my hope is that there is some form of consent, that she is aware, and that what I see in the photo is not the horrible truth I feel.
Often, when information - true or not - is shared in a lighthearted way, but without a thought as to how it might hurt or will ever hurt, I get the milder knee-jerk reaction. It is at least easier to understand and forgive. And by forgive, I mean to grasp that the intent was innocent, with a desire similar to that which I expressed above firstly.
But often, the information shared is mean-spirited and riddled with a most insistent, ferocious desire that it be truth. This kind brings me real pain.
So there is information out there that I hope...sincerely hope...is a misleading plant, specifically because it is so dangerous. I can't help but become furious at the insensitivity of people who share information that could lead to the permanent loss of a person's privacy.
Right now my knee-jerk reaction is the horrifyingly sharp kind.
