Amazon moving in on the game industry
Although there have been talk for a long time about Amazon stepping deeper into the game industry, beyond just selling products, I for one never really saw it as more than rumours.
Well, it now seems like they are on the move with the news breaking that the gigantic online store have purchased Double Helix Games. Not exactly the biggest developer out there, but they did leave their mark with the latest Killer Instinct for the Xbox One.
I find this interesting as I don't really know what plans Amazon have. I mean, proven time and time again, the games industry is a tough one to make a profit in, so what do they really hope to get out of this? There are however talks going around that they want to push gaming on kindle. Which would be the most logical thing in my opinion. But with Double Helix?
Hopefully they will be generous and let the studio delevop more AAA titles as well as tablet games, seeing how they might have finally found their spot going from making a few stinkers to a fighting game that got reatively high praise.
Which in turns makes it odd that Microsoft did not grabbed them, seeing how they are trying to get more in-house development going. But Microsft stated that they will hand over the Killer Instinct franchise to another team instead, meaning that if Double Helix want to stay in the fighting genre, they will have to come up with something new. Maybe something for tablets?
As many times before it will no doubt be interesting to see what the future holds...
